Esta denied - FINAL UPDATE

Eldest DS who is 25 and been travelling for many years, no-where that the USA don't like just the usual USA, Australia, NZ, Canada, Europe and China. He is going to Canada in November for 2 years and has all that sorted already. Anyway got all our estas sorted and his has been declined We can't think why but after looking online I wonder if it is because his passport was issued in 2009. If that is the case does anyone know if he can get a new passport and then reapply for his esta or does he have to go down the visa route?

Having just googled it for you, you can only use an ESTA if you go to America for 90 days or less.

Why do you think op's son is going for more than 90 days? As I understand it, he is going with his family for a holiday for the usual 1-3 weeks. Every other family member has been granted their ESTA but the son hasn't.

To the op, I would try to reapply. Make sure he checks each question correctly (in case of a mistake last time) but if this is refused again, possibly he will have to quickly apply for a visa. I have no insight why this would be the case or how he does this, hopefully someone can come along and advise on this. There may be an issue due to his imminent long trip to Canada, but this is just me speculating, hopefully you can get more informative information on here soon. Good luck 😊

Is there any reason you can think of why his application would be denied? Previous over-stay maybe? Are you certain there were no errors on the application?
I’m sorry I can’t be of any use, but really hope you manage to get things sorted quickly. X

I think Andybear got it mixed up when the OP said her son was going to Canada for 2 years.

How stressful for you and ds.

I don’t think having a passport issued in 2009 will be a problem. My passport was issued in 2009 and I have a valid Esta. Does he have the e-passport symbol on the front of his passport? If it doesn’t he will need to apply for a new passport, but I thought all current valid UK passports were compliant.

Did he inadvertently tick yes for any of the answers as that will automatically deny an Esta.

The most common one to make the mistake on is Question 1. Do you have a physical or mental disorder? You only answer yes to this question if because of your disorder you are a threat to yourself or the safety of property or other people and you will be denied an esta.

They can only reset for certain questions and you will need to contact CBP for this to be done. Otherwise he will have to go down the visa route.

No he didn’t overstay and he assured me he didn’t get into any trouble when he was there. I asked him if he got drunk and disorderly and he said almost definitely but nothing that involved the police 😂

I think it’s the Canada thing nothing else makes sense! Unless it is the passport I’ll ask to see it to check! Very annoying and expensive!
