San diego & anaheim
We are considering going to california for 14 nights, ideally 6 nights in san diego, 4 nights anaheim & 4 nights santa monica. Does anyone know if we would be best to hire a car or use uber? We r 2 adults, 4 yr old & a 10yr old at time of travel. Also with regards to spending money, is it generally more expensive than florida for eating out? I can’t seem to find theme park ticket prices either. The girls would love disneyland, legoland, universal, san diego zoo & seaworld!
Thanks! |

We didn't need a car in San Diego. There is a good trolley/bus service and Ubers are everywhere. The city is compact so everywhere is cheap to get to.
We hired a one way hire with Avis from San Diego to Anaheim - car then sat in the hotel car park while at Disney (we could walk to the parks). We drove to WB Studios on our home day before visiting Santa Monica before a late flight home. Food wise didn't see any difference in prices, hotels yes, food no. |

We didn’t need a car in San Diego (we had one but didn’t really use it and had to pay to valet park it so it was expensive for the use we got out of it).
We also have managed many times with no car in Anaheim but tend to stay walking distance to the parks and then Uber if we want to go to, say, a shopping area. I have not done it but you can take an Amtrak between San Diego and Anaheim - about two hours or so.

We’ve always had a car for our California trips but as others have said it has often sat in the hotel car park and not used most days. San Diego is very walkable and many of the hotels in Anaheim are within walking distance of the parks. We’ve stayed at both Glendale and Burbank for our LA visits and used the car to travel to Universal, Santa Monica etc.

Might be cheaper on the Amtrak and foregoing the car at all, but depends on prices

We usually have a car in orlando, we like it for keeping the pram etc in lol we just done a uk road trip and it was fab for having separate bags etc but keeping most of the stuff in the car. My girls will still be quite young so they wouldn’t be able to help with luggage etc
