Sorry for being cynical.
It's not just great PR though is it? It means all the staff get the day off and don't have to work those 6 hours.

Sure, it's less of a loss than if Boxing Day was on a weekday but it is still a loss. They still chose to close when they could've chosen to remain open like other supermarkets and made more money.

I worked for a large DIY chain years ago, they opened on boxing day, couldn't have drinks with the family Christmas day night because of driving the next morning. Son has to work boxing day, but always books a taxi to get to work that morning, at least he can have a few drinks.

Any way forcing all shops to close would just drive up online sales. You need to stop online sales as well which we know is impossible.

Online sales will never stop. We are lucky that it’s been voluntary up til now but many in retail it’s not the case. I understand the difficulties with other jobs like hospitality. However for supermarket staff especially Christmas is relentless. It felt like Christmas with all the panic buying last year.
If people didn’t go into the shops there would be no demand for anywhere to open on Boxing Day.

This is brilliant news, my sister works in retail and always has to pick between having Boxing Day off or New Year's Day off, so she always picks Boxing Day as that is more important to us as a family. But if a lot of stores follow this, she may get an extra day off this year! I still can't understand the panic you see in shops when they are going to be closed for a day or two, give the poor retail workers a proper break!

True. But this isn't really about celebrating Christmas as such. This is about public holidays and the need for shops to demand their staff work (or not) on public holidays.

And the UK does celebrate Christmas, even if some of its people don't.

I'm sure some people would shop online, true. But those orders don't have to be fulfilled on that day. And at least it's a step in the right direction. It means at least some of Morrisons shopworkers don't have to work on Boxing Day.

When I first started working for Asda they didn’t open Boxing Day or New Year’s Day but they followed Tesco about 10/11 years ago but it was voluntary and still was for some when I left.
Where I work now we close both days and are allowed to take holidays between Christmas and New Year which I’ve just had approved so I’ll finish Christmas Eve if I’m working and won’t go back until January 4th which is something I’ve never experienced in retail

Does this just apply to England?

In Scotland we don't have reduced hours on a Sunday. I don't remember it ever being like that.

Most of the people who think shops should open Boxing Day aren’t people who have every had to work it themselves .
