Two different airlines!

Would you ever book through a third party with two different airlines? I’ve got a price for next summer within my budget but flying out with air Canada and home with united! Is this sensible/normal? What happens if things have to be changed/cancelled? Has anyone else done this before?

Is it the Air Canada "rouge" service? If so, this is their no frills / low cost carrier and doesn't have the same facilities like in-flight entertainment screens, if you're not aware (or this would be an issue).

They're both Star Alliance members with a codeshare agreement so from a ticketing perspective, it will be a single ticket issued by one of those airlines with a codeshare on the other flights. I haven't flown that particular pairing but have done other codeshares without any issues and would do so again.

However, I wouldn't currently book through a third party. I prefer to deal directly with the airlines myself in case any issues arise. And one thing to bear in mind with an Air Canada flight is you'll be transiting through Canada so will have another set of entry rules to keep track of. Not a huge deal but not something I can be bothered with due to how quickly Covid restrictions can change.

What are your dates and budget? Might be able to find some alternatives.

I agree with the above. In the current climate I would not choose to pay a third party. We really don't know what's around the next corner yet. Flights are changing times/days/ getting cancelled all the time still. The timetables are still pretty fluid and with a third party you have no control.

I would not want the stress of this book with the airline and book a return even if it costs more

Likewise, I only now deal direct with airlines. I have no problem with codeshare, though.

As long as they are in the same alliance yes and have done. United/AC/Lufthansa is the same alliance. BA/AA/Aer Lingus. Delta/Virgin. It's really useful when you want to go out to one city and home from another. The destination is served by airline A but to get home airline A would route you through their hub. So using one of their partners gets you home directly. I do that a lot as we tend to do multi cities. Sometimes the partner airline is cheaper too. I've only flown on Virgin once and that was because the Delta website had their flight for a few hundred less. I've also booked United flights on Lufthana.

I tend to avoid third parties though unless there are really significant savings.

Ok thanks all for your advice I’m not sure if the savings is worth it and yes I see the point about flying through Canada especially when we hope to fly from Dublin and clear immigration there! Think I’ll look at booking through an airlines own site!

Nope as I will now try to only book directly with the airline. I am happy to book with the codeshare airline. But not an agent or third part where possible.
