The hop on hop off bus is also a good way to see the sites. We only used it for one day, but you can get a 2 day ticket. We got off at Coronado Hotel/beach, Balboa park, Old Town and Hortons Plaza, if you had a 2 day ticket you'd have enough time to see those properly, we had 1 1/2 - 2hrs at each place.
Oh and we spent a whole day at the zoo, got there for opening and left about 1/2 hour before closing, we really enjoyed it.
Wow, it certainly sounds great for non-drivers! Were you happy with the hotel? Do you remember how much the taxi cost to the zoo and Balboa Park? Thanks

Hi Dave! Oooh didn't know you'd been, I will be picking your brain at intervals now! Which are nice beaches and where did you stay? I'm wondering if there's a hotel on a beach which has public transport accessible?

We did what was called I think a seal tour around san diego and you get on and off, it takes place on an amphibious vehicle, we didn't get off that much to be honest but really enjoyed it nevertheless. In SD if you don't have transport I don't think it would be an issue as long as you stayed central we were a bit out of the way.

we liked mission beach, thought la jolla cove was lovely,
but for some reason lesley and me adored ocean beach
it was 99' when we went, we were thinking about returning a few years ago and were mooching for hotels and we found these.

they looked really appealing.

when we stayed we were at hotel circle south, IMHO, a bit far out from the beaches etc, we drove so it was n't too bad, but there are some lovely places in the centre.

oh, and don't forget seaworld

and your DH would love the harbour, there are some boats to die for.

what about a drive over to Palm springs? It's beautfiul scenery to drve through, beautful towns when you get there and there is a desert museum.

Santa Catalina island is beautiful too.

Thumbs up

We did a trip to Yosemite by train from San Francisco which was great. It connected with a coach for the last part of the journey. Yosemite is amazingly beautiful.
We went to Alcatraz in San Francisco which was very memorable and had a great bus tour of the city.
We've also done the Grand Canyon by steam train from Williams Arizona which was great fun.
Love San Diego especially the old town. The zoo is a good zoo but I'm not a great zoo fan.
We also loved Santa Barbara - very pretty - great beach and the Mission was very interesting.
I enjoyed Palm Springs too

Were going to West Coast next year & are planning 4 nights in San Diego. Ive just started researching & it seems easy to get around by bus or tram. Our main plans are Seaworld, Zoo, Coronado Island & spending a day looking around different parts of San Diego.

I don't think you'd get Sam in one of those beaches, lovely as they look, lol, she's got a think about being over the water.

I've been looking at pics of the harbour online, it looks really nice, and I've found a hotel which is right near the harbor, it's called Half Moon Bay Inn, which looks great and they have suites.
