The Handlery in Union Sq is nice, I prefer Union Square area, Fishermans Wharf seems a bit touristy for me. I like going down there for a couple of hours but its nice to get back to the bustling city streets!

We stayed at The Tuscan. It's in the Fishermans Wharf area, on the same street as the Holiday Inn. Lovely hotel with some nice touches (free wine hour was my favourite)
Location was good for Pier 39, Alcatraz boat pier, public transport and The Hollywood Cafe over the road is amazing! |

We were only there for two nights, one full day, and stayed in San Bruno near airport, mainly as I was picking up hire car near airport next morning. We stayed in Villa Montes, which was a nice hotel but no real hotel facilities, although there are other hotels in airport area, and these tend to be less expensive than fishermans wharf, union square etc.
Downside was aircraft noise, and need to use car or BART to get to tourist areas. We were only at Pier 39 for a few hrs so parking was not too expensive, and the airport hotels tend to have free parking if you have a car. If going back, I may have chosen a hotel at Union sq, or fishermans wharf, and left the car pickup until we were ready to leave San Fran, although the car gave us freedom for Muir Woods etc.

Thank you again for all the replies. Certainly plenty to look at.
George we will have a car as we are driving from LA and then back again. So even though we'll have the car we figure we won't be using it it will need to be parked. I know some of them are scary Keep them coming

Parking can be quite expensive in Tourist areas. $50-60 per day when I checked.

Another vote for the Tuscan. We stayed there 10 years ago and will be staying there in June
Lovely hotel, excellent location and also benefits from a lovely restaurant on the same site

Think the key is to keep looking as prices fluctuate all the time we thought the very same for our October trip. We thought no way would we be able to stay in Fishermans Wharf as prices were so over our budget then we saw a good deal and booked straight away booking through Quidco for £120 a night . Prices have shot up again now.
