Sons friend is diabetic
My sons friend is diabetic and this is the first year we have taken him to Orlando with us, was wondering if there are any security problems with him getting his insulin and needles into the parks. Do we need doctors letters as proof of Diabeties. Are there any other pitfalls regearding this we need to be aware of? He is 17 and needs to inject 5 times per day.

Specialist Nurses letter will do stating he must carry the needles and insulin on board as the hold-all of a plane freezes them. During x-rays at the airports he may wish to ask for his insulin/BG kit not to be put through and simply checked by hand as some devices can be affected by the x-ray machines!
He should also look into getting a 'Frio' pouch or two to keep the pens/vials cool over there in the heat to make sure the insulin isnt "deactivated" (I'm sure he will know this already though ) Security checks into the parks rarely enquire too much into things but on occasion they do ask you to remove the meds from the 'Frio' pouch just to clarify what it is There should be no problems, I have been there at least once a year and never been stopped nor asked about anything Diabetes/ medication related. Enjoy your holiday! Danie

As he is under 18 you should have a letter of authority from his parents to consent to medical treatment in an emergency. It would also be helpful to have a brief medical history and list of his medications.
I'm assuming he manages his own insulin and testing but you need to be aware of what to do if he has a hypo or is otherwise unwell. In the parks First Aid will refrigerate insulin for him if required and provide a private place to inject. |

Would also suggest you carry some rapid release sugar food or drink in case of impending hypo. I always carry DH monitoring kit and insulin pens but also some sweets if he starts to feel unwell (Don't know why he can't carry it himself but that's another story!)
