Meeting in the middle

My brother, SIL, niece and nephew live in Brisbane. We haven't all been together since 2013 and the plan was for us to visit Brisbane and NZ next Summer. We've been several times to Australia and NZ ( my dad lived there for many years before he passed away). Anyway due to my work ( teacher) and their school timetable it just doesn't make sense for us to spend all that money to visit in our summer holidays as the kids will be in school, it's winter and it just seems an extortionate amount. Plus I'm not sure I'm emotionally ready to go back to NZ.

I was talking to my brother this morning and he suggested we meet up next Christmas instead and meet up somewhere along the way.
I'm thinking Malaysia, Thailand etc?
Apart from a nights stop over in Kuala Lumpur and a few days in langkawi I've never really travelled that area.

So basically I'm looking for suggestions of where to visit (beach preferably) that will be cheaper than the £4-5k it will cost me to get to Australia, that is family orientated and safe (as safe as you can be given the current state of things).

Thanks all.

How about Phuket (Thailand)? We flew there last November with Emirates - Manchester - Dubai - Phuket.
Penang in Malaysia has some lovely beach resorts.

My brother did mention Phuket.
We've just found out that our other brother (he lives in Helsinki) is going to be in Thailand at the same time next christmas but he's going to Koh Lanta? I checked out the prices of flights to there for this christmas and it would be cheaper to go to Australia.

I'll check Emirates out. We have flown with them a few times and really like them. Plus my plane mad eldest is desperate to fly on the double decker airbus.

We love Khao lak.we have just booked for our 4th visit, for next year.
If you have children,I would say it is a much better option, than Phuket.
You actually do fly into Phuket, but then it is about an hour away.
I think koh Lanta, will be about 4 hours away though.
Not sure of Christmas prices for flights, but we have just paid 455,for our April flights.
Was actually looking at flights to Sydney, for next Feb,the other day.couldnt believe they were only £608.flew into Brisbane a few times,as my mum lived in Hervey Bay,before she past away, but never got the flights,at that price.
Seriously thinking about booking them

Those prices are great. I can't even get anywhere close to that with having to travel in school holidays. It's so frustrating.
I loved Sydney. We got a water taxi across the harbour and it was definitely one of those, I can't believe I'm here moments!
