Booking a Disney Cruise in August

Hi,
It is our 10th wedding anniversary next year and I was thinking of booking a disney cruise as a special treat for myself, DH, DS and DD. However I have a few questions I was hoping you could all answer...

1. Is cruising in August a bit risky with the chance of hurrricanes - I know this is a tricky one because we don't know what the weather will be doing but could it be cancelled/nightmarish!?!? Any experiences welcomed. Can't go any other time of year as I'm a teacher

2. Our children will be 5 and 2 (3 in the October). How do the kids clubs work? Is there one that they could attend together? Not that I'm suggesting we may want some time alone ...

3. What type of cabin would people suggest with 2 kids - we would like to be able to sit around if the kids have a daytime nap

4. Is it worth the money? I know this is a daft place to ask that question but although it is our anniversary and we would love it I'm wondering whether the kids are old enough to appreciate it or whether I will spend 3 days chasing them around the deck and be shattered by the end of it!

Thankyou in advance - I'm sure I'll come up with more questions before I actually take the plunge and book!

Its rare a cruise is cancelled due to the weather - the captain may divert to different ports/alter intineries etc and generally do his best to steer around to avoid any hurricane area. To be honest its not a regular occurance.

I'm pretty sure they would end up in 2 different clubs - Flounders Nursery (a payable extra though, that needs to be pre booked) and The Oceaners club (completely free and on tap !)for the elder one - The DCL official website should have more details on both of these.

3. What type of cabin would people suggest with 2 kids - we would like to be able to sit around if the kids have a daytime nap

I would suggest you get a verandah cabin - either a Navigator's type cat.7(semi enclosed) or fully open (with perspex or solid sides) type cat6. You would at least be able to sit out there and take in the views whilst reading a book and/or enjoying a glass of something refreshing. Though you might want to at least consider an interior cabin for afternoon naps since it will be darker and therefore easier to get the kids to sleep ?

4.Is it worth the money? I know this is a daft place to ask that question but although it is our anniversary and we would love it I'm wondering whether the kids are old enough to appreciate it or whether I will spend 3 days chasing them around the deck and be shattered by the end of it!

Yes, yes, yes ! -not just for your kids (though your youngest is obviously not going to remember too much) , but also for you ! Better value if you book direct with DCL or a cruise specialist US travel agent.
Try a short 3 night (2 day) or 4 night (3 day) one first, and just see if you don't come back for more

Thankyou in advance - I'm sure I'll come up with more questions before I actually take the plunge and book!

Claire

welcome on board!

Judy's maanaged to answer your questions really but just wanted to add my agreement about choosing a verandah so you could have a lovely afternoon relax (if thats possible with 2 little ones) there, watching the seas

There's always the odd chance you may be affeceted by bad weather but we've only once been diverted to other ports during a hurricane (in October 2005). We didn't expereince any of the bad weather as we moved from the western caribbean to the eastern

... and imho its definatley worth the money, especially for a special occasion! Make suer you let them know when booking that its your anniversary, and also tell your servers at dinner on the first night

Happy planning!

There are also 3 and 4 day cruises on special offer at the moment so even more reason to book

Worth checking if you have already booked too ! ... as you should be able to get any discount applied if your cruise has since gone down in price.

... as long as you booked direct with DCL or through a US cruise specialist.

Discounts sound good Where do I look for the offers? Is it with a specific agent or DCL? My dates are still flexible within the English school holiday dates. Thanks for the tip!

Try both DCL and any of the reputable US agents (Dreamsunlimited, Vacationstogo, Allseasons, etc.).

See who has the best offer - if they have the same as DCL then book with DCL and grab any onboard credits they are offering, then tranfer your booking to the US agent with the best onboard credit terms to grab them also (you don't lose anything by doing this and can still access your booking on the DCL website). You can do this switch as long as you haven't paid in full.
