We have used the DDP five times when it is free and we have never used all the credits even DS who is a big eater. So we would never pay for it and would just pay as we go along. We bought back a lot of snacks which we ended up giving away to other people and even doing this we still had 7 qs meals left in September.

I would if it was in sterling but there's no way to know what will happen to the dollar rate. What if you bought it now and the rate improved by next November?

Whatever the election result in the US, the dollar will drop against the pound. The markets will be uneasy as the result will be close and they will be adjusting to the fall out from being used to a stable and more superior leader.
If Trump gets in ching ching for us, as the dollar will fall but on the flip side there will be World War 3 lol ! I am seriously concerned about the current rate, I go next year in August and glad I have got a package cost way in advance with DDP. |

We have a 7-night stay booked at OKW for next September which, because it's a deluxe, includes free DDP for the 3 of us plus a $200 gift card (I think: they're advertising it as $100 now). We're then going to tag on 5 nights with our DVC points - hopefully in the same 1-bedroom villa to save us moving. What we'll do for food for the second 5-day booking is our next concern. Whether we do OOP or buy a plan will depend entirely on the dollar/Sterling ratio.
That said, if we're going to be going to Universal next year it'll make sense to do that in the non-free DDP part of the holiday and we'll just eat off site. I bought the DDP for our August holiday purely because it was our silver wedding and we wanted to have a stress-free trip. Of course it cost more than if we'd just either bought the QSDP or even paid cash, but the whole point of this trip was that it was a special treat for us.

Apologies for bumping this thread but I think the OP raises an interesting point.
I booked flights about 6 months ago but no accommodation as we are going at Easter and the Free Dining plan was not on offer for this time of year. We normally stay on site and I am looking at POFQ for 8 nights for 4 people. Add DDP direct with Disney UK: £1343.68 Add DDP direct with Disney US: £1766.03 ($2154.56 @ $1.22 /£1) Clearly cheaper to book with Disney UK but the real alternative is to pay cash as you go. Assuming $40 each for an evening meal, $11 for breakfast and $3 each for snacks, this comes to $1,824 in total. At $1.22 to the £ this comes out at £1,495. Obviously this commits you to eating at Disney every night but at the current exchange rate, paying for the DDP becomes much more interesting.
