A little advice needed please

Good afternoon

I booked back in September for this August

Myself, DH DD(19) DS(14) DS (4)

My littlest one has been struggling for a while.
Gets aggressive, shouts, screams, melt downs etc.
He's also been having motor tics
He's worse in school holidays, out of routine etc.
He's generally good at nursery.

He doesn't like play centres or the cinema.

As the time is getting closer I'm beginning to wonder if I'm doing the right thing. I really don't know how he's going to react with the noise, crowds, rides etc.

He's currently being assessed by healthy young minds ( used to be cahms) but our first appointment was 2 weeks ago, they just said they'd be in touch.

So I'm just after a but of reassurance/ advice.
Does anyone else have a child similar.

We went to gullivers world in Feb.
He went on one or 2 rides.

We are staying on Disney for 3 weeks
Thank you

Hi there
We’re here at the moment with my ds who’s 12 and on the spectrum. This is our 4th trip.
I got lots of advice from posters here. Every child is different and every child on the spectrum is also different. You’ll know your little one best but I would say it is possible and with planning every one will have a great time. We found being well prepared, doing short days, taking breaks regularly, pool time, ear defenders, electronic devices (as much as I hate them) all help. You can use fast passes and disability access if you have diagnosis which will help. You’re older kids might be able to help out or go off on their own for a time. You can also use a stroller which might be helpful. There’s lots to do other than the rides, shows etc especially for the younger ones.
There tons of help here and advice about airports and managing the heat and staying onsite.

I hope everything works out for you and your little one and that you have a great holiday.
Xx

My daughter only goes on the gentle rides. She’s scared of new things. We watched lots of you tube before hand. Took ear defenders. Pushchair was essential, if it got too much she-sat in it and pulled the hood down. Early starts, lots of breaks and no full days. We used DAS pass. Also she would nt wear any of her new clothes, three weeks she lived in two dresses and same three pairs of knickers. Thank goodness we were in a villa with a washing machine.
I’d chase cahms up- we had all sorts of problems with lost paperwork and appointments.

Just try to go at their pace with a very loose plan, but do try to allow for lots of breaks etc, just to calm down with all the excitement. Before you go look into possible "quiet" spots you can just sit and enjoy a drink and snack. I see your going july/august time, dont forget to keep them hydrated etc.

DAS should help a bit with the queues.

You don't know until you try! It would be worse to make himself a prisoner and never do anything. As someone who has dealt with severe Autism for years I think you have got to give it a go.

My advice is to as much planning as you can. What are your main concerns? Would special assistance/DAS help asap you? What are the definite no gos. Can you make use of ear defenders etc? Should you plan your visits on quieter days and go first thing when the parks are quiet? If you do this you should be ok. Though you can't plan for everything so try to stay calm and keep your sense of humour.

Oh and ignore other people.

Dont know if i was lucky but my 10 year old had a huge meltdown in Seaworld last last. 2 long and draining hours of me trying to restrain him (alone as i had to send my 12 year old off with her dad so not everyones day was ruined) and eventually he collapsed in the middle of the path.

People couldnt have been more helpful. So many people stopped and asked if i needed help/was ok etc. It got exhausting saying yes to everyone but boy i appreciated it. People were on the whole incredible.

Another time when he was 8 we were at Universal and another meltdown and a cast member noticed us (hard not to!) and went out of her way to help us by getting both kids a nice cold butterbeer then escorting us to another more suitable ride where we got to fastpass to the front (he wasnt diagnosed then and didnt know about DAS) he calmed down and then she took us to customer service and got us a DAS pass (i had explained during her time with us that he was going through the assesment process as there were obvious issues) She made our day she really did.

I think people are more understanding and accepting there than here to be honest.

just t point out you dont need a diagnosis to get a DAS at any of the parks - you just need to explain to guest services why queuing will be difficult due to sensory, behavioural difficulties.
