On every trip, we visit 3-4 times each year & came back in September, there are a handful of stores who will ask for ID when paying by card.
The stores can vary on each trip. |

ID is always requested if you do not sign your card or your signature has worn out.

Interesting; my husbands signature has completely worn out on his card & he wasn't asked for ID; how would they see the signature strip for the majority of transactions in these days of chip & pin?

It is inconsistent as to when they ask for ID with credit cards, but normally it's purchases over $50 (this is what I was told by a shop assistant) when it's a foreign card they want to see it (note I've not been asked plenty of times on purchases well over $50).

Scooby,
I have been asked twice in the last month when using my well worn debit card. Upon thinking about it, both times were at the Lindt chocolate outlet and for some reason they have a chip but everything is run without a pin (as a credit card, I guess). I don't think I have ever been asked when I use my pin whether or not they have a chip. Most places do have a chip reader but a few still do not (my bank among them). I always carry an ID (my driver's license) even when traveling with a passport, |

This certainly isn’t true as most shops don’t bother to check. It really is just a small number of shops that have a policy for all transactions
In general it’s not used
