Thank you, everyone. Your feedback has given me much more confidence to push ahead without data add-ons. When I remind DH that we used to manage holidays without smartphones he looks at me like I’ve grown a second head!

In April 2019 Vodafone included roaming in the USA free in our plan. They removed it in November but didn't bother telling us

I simply don't trust them and have no idea of why I might want to phone anyone anyway

I have the unlimited plan with roaming plus (that covers the USA, the other roaming plan doesn't)

Yes you can. This year is the first time out of 25+ years that we used any mobile data and that was because we had a free sim with data for 5 days.

We have an entirely separate phone for holiday - payg, no data.
Lots of reasons for it, and never once missed data! We can do all we need via WiFi
Try it, don’t think you’ll miss it

What happens if you have an RTA? We were involved in an horrendous car crash and needed our phone to call Emergency Services etc. Would never travel anywhere without a phone in case of emergencies.

We only use wifi for the 179 days we're in Fl, but then I don't use mobile data at home either, simply PAYG which costs circa £10 every two years as I rarely make calls. Loads of hotspots in Fl and the UK so I can speak to my ma/family via Whatsapp/Facetime.

This is also the first year without a Tracfone and that has worked too, I think, so far, I've made 3 free calls via Gmail to US numbers.

In which case I’d turn on my data and pay the cost. But that’s an exceptional situation.

I had Vodafone at £6/day a few years ago. I turned it on twice and then consciously used as much data as I could on those days but on the other days I managed happily without.
