London for a 10 year old!

So I’ve just booked a little trip for me and my 10 year old boy for the October half term to visit London 😁. Last time we went he was 3 years old and we stayed outside London and travelled in 1 day to do very limited sightseeing but mainly to go to harrods to see Father Christmas and had afternoon tea in the Georgian cafe there. We did the HP studio tour too.

Fast forward to him being 10. We’re leaving my husband and older son (17) at home as they have work and well I’m fed up of not having a holiday so wanted something to look forward to.

We’re going 24-28th October in the half term. So far I have booked shrek adventure, London eye, Madame Tussaud’s (merlin pass holders), natural history museum and The Lion King theatre show.

We also want to visit the markets, he loves street food so planning on Camden, borough and portobello markets to have a look around and sample food. He loves history too hence the NHM.

I’m looking at booking the Hilton in Kensington and obviously using public transport. We’re from Cheshire and London novices.

Any advice on must do with 10 year olds, places to eat, visit, etc would be gratefully received.

Thank you 😊

There is currently a Harry Potter exhibition near Covent Garden.

I think the London Dungeon is included with the Merlin pass. We took the kids when they were your sons age and they really enjoyed it. It was completely different to what I was expecting.

Science museum is a also worth a look next door to natural history

tower of london is a good day out

imperial war museum

also look at brick lane for street food/markets

fwiw personally I wouldnt bother with madame tussauds... long waits/crowded and cramped... lets face it we all know what 'famous' people look like... ive only been once couldnt believe how pants it was... imo of course...

I think the aquarium is also covered by the merlin pass and is right next to the London eye.

Covent Garden is lovely and the London Transport Museum is located there with plenty to interest a 10 year boy.

Whilst you are at the London Eye jump on an Uber boat along the Thames to the O2, get off and then get the cable car over the river and and get the DLR back up the other side. Our kids loved the experience of the boat, the cable car and then the driverless train and its all really cheap to do.

Thank you all for the suggestions I’ll make a note of them all!

Yes the dungeons and sea life are included in the merlin passes too so I’ll probably book those also 😊

If you are planning on a lot of the merlin attractions I would suggest staying somewhere other than Kensington which is quite out of the way (we are staying there on Monday as we want to do something other than the tourist stuff with our kids this time). Premier Inn at County Hall is a fabulous location and will mean you can walk to so many things you want to do, seeing things above ground along the way.
