Crabbing….?!

My kids want to go fishing for crabs after seeing people do it in Whitby.
I’ve found somewhere local to go (Clevedon marine lake) but what do I need to buy and take with us?

I’m assuming a fishing line and a bucket? I’ve read bacon is good for bait - does it have to be cooked or raw? Would ham do?

Thanks 😂

You can normally buy crabbing kits in shops near places that are good for crabbing, and I’m sure you’ll get them online. They are normally just a few pounds at most. A clear bucket is handy for inspecting your catch before returning it to the sea.

Raw bacon is great bait.

Thank you
Just looking online and it looks like you can get lines with net bags on the end and you put the bacon in the net bag. Is this right?

Not keen on handling raw bacon but will get the kids doing it 😂

We are seaside residents and crabbing is a major part of our fun.

We buy the bigger round nets and put the bacon inside. The lines are a lot harder to keep the crabs on.

You then need a little net on a stick to catch them with as they come out of the water, they are often on the outside of the net so will fall off back into the water if you don’t have the additional net to catch them with. (Two man job).

Clear bucket to see the crabs in.

Cheap bacon raw is ideal. Don’t spend a fotrtune.

Make sure you go when the tide is right. If we go when the tide is out round here we don’t get any.

Oh and have a crab race at the end watching them all go back into the sea.

Have the best fun, it’s the cheapest most enjoyable day for the family whatever the age.

Thank you, this sounds perfect!
I’m sure we will have a laugh can’t believe we’ve never done it before!

I’m off to order some bits off Amazon 😂

all the info about Clevedon marine lake crabbing is on their website

they do say if you use bacon then use it sparingly and fresh mackerel is a better alternative bait

I love crabbing. We use lines rather than nets (other than a grab net.) Getting them up from the water to the quayside without them making a leap for it is half thr fun :-).

Simple pleasures. Keep the grab net for rockpooling too. Lovely.

This was the highlight of our week away in Yorkshire! We stayed just outside Whitby for a few nights and our grandchildren loved crabbing (their first time). We had to go every day at least once. The best things in life are free!

We used cheap raw bacon and a big round net. We had a bucket but ended up just letting them run out the net back into the water. We lost count on how many they caught. It was great fun.

Crabbing is a brilliant and cheap day out.
Used to go regularly. We became so organised and started taking a pop up tent and packed lunch.
Pumpkin has given great advice.

We used the little bags washing tablets (persil? ) came in for the bacon. Tied them to the hook. Bacon rind works well as it doesn't disintegrate after a few minutes in the water!
