4 Hotels, 12 Theme Parks!?! Call That A Holiday? Yes, I Call It Heaven! May 2017.

WARNING: IF YOU ARE MY WIFE KELLY THEN PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS TRIP REPORT YET. I WILL SAY WHEN! PLEASE! . Edit. You may now read!

FINAL INTINEARY UPDATED!Click here!

Come with me and you’ll be
In a world of pure imagination
Take a look and you’ll see
Into your imagination

We’ll begin with a spin
Trav’ling in the world of my creation
What we’ll see will defy
Explanation

If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Want to change the world, there’s nothing to it

There is no life I know
To compare with pure imagination
Living there, you’ll be free
If you truly wish to be.

Willy Wonka. (Gene Wilder, the true Wonka not the Depp monstrosity)

Hello and welcome to my 3rd trip report. This will be just as long winded and early as the last two that I did

So let the waffle begin!

I'm really pleased to writing another one as after our last trip in 2015 it seemed unlikely we'd be returning for a good few years. Circumstances have dictated a much earlier trip than anticipated which I will get to soon.

Cast

We are two cast members down from our last trip. DMIL and DFIL will not be joining us this time. They will be looking after our puppy Reggie. (Probably the worlds most handsome dog).

DMIL and DFIL are not coming this time as it was a bit much for them the last time we went but frankly I don't think they know what they are letting themselves in for with the dog!

This is nothing against the in laws as they do an awful lot for us but I'm really pleased to be going just the four of us (so he says now)

You may remember us from my last 2 trip reports which you can click on the links for Maybe Tiaras Definitely Tantrums Trip Report Index and The Crazy Old Maurice May 2015 Trip Report Index.

So it will be me, George, 41 at the time of the trip. The chief planner and Dibb obsessed person. I find the planning incredibly relaxing and keeps my mind occupied from life's other stresses(to follow). Used to like football, movies, tv and reading but now have no interests other than planning this holiday.

DW Kelly, 40 at time of the trip. The boss. Does a massive amount for us and deserves this trip more than anyone. We could fall out though if she is in stop and pause mode rather than theme park commando mode like me. Looking forward to the Outlet malls. Dollar Tree was an obsession last time.

DD1 Evie Mae, 9 at the time of the trip but has her 10th birthday while we are there. One of the main reasons we are going is for Evie Mae. Evie has had for years trouble with her eyes. No real diagnosis was ever had until late last year when she was unexpectedly and devastatingly diagnosed with Cone Dystrophy. It's a hard thing to explain but she basically has no central vision and is now severely sight impaired. See post 45 for an explanation This has been a hammer blow for me and Kelly. At the time of writing we are unsure if her vision will deteriorate further, hence the desire to return to Orlando. She has been great and other than a few moments handles everything much better than I could have possible imagined. She has many challenges ahead but I'm sure she will cope. DW Kelly has been amazing. She has taken charge of all Evie's care and we getting some great help and advice. Kelly has been phenomenal so far. She is constantly finding out new info and doing paperwork in regards to what Evie needs. We have all her care being done at Great Ormond Street. School have been good but we are waiting to see if we may have to go to a different school that offers specialist support. This will happen eventually but it could be sooner rather than later.

Prone to the odd tantrum or ten and is bit dramatic at times (think Verruca Salt, again proper Wonka film, that doesn't make me Roy Kinnear though) but most of the time a very sensible young lady. We just hope that she doesn't have too much trouble in regards to her visibility and her being able to enjoy everything. Shows and attractions we will have to try and get as close as we can to things and I'm starting to read up on the GAC cards at Disney to see if that can help but I'm am a novice on that and unsure of how that all works.
UPDATED POST 32

DD2 Lily Belle, 8 at the time of our trip. I nickname her The Volcano. Temper like Sonny Corleone. Can explode at anytime! Little worried if one (or 500) of her explosions will happen on holiday. She cares not for location. She is a real character and very funny. Fond of nudity. Hopes one day to be rich so she can take care of us. Has several suitors even though she is only 7 at the time of writing.

The three lady's above are my world. I don't see them as much as I want or as I should due to work. The words from the song at the beginning sum up what I want them to take from the holiday. You can throw up now.

The girls aren't going to be told we are going. I want to tell them at Christmas. Kelly wants to do it on the day we go! I'm not certain who's going to win that argument! Yeah right, argument with the wife we all know who wins

The when and where.

So this is going to be a monster of trip and a highly complicated one as well! We haven't had as long to save as I'd like as this has been a bit of will we won't we type deal. So it's kind of on budget. Full on budget trip is impossible to Orlando.

Our last two trips have been in May and again it's May that we have gone for. Great weather, very manageable crowds. We will be utilising the half term week but taking the girls out of school before the half term as well. Don't shoot us! Sometimes other things are more important in life and the girls won't suffer missing a little school.

We are going for an epic 18 nights! Saturday May 13th 2017 until Wednesday 31st May. We are very much onsite people. On our last two trips in 2012 and 2015 we have been to Old Key West and Saratoga Springs.(Kelly and I went to Port Orleans Riverside in 2006 for our honeymoon). On those trips DMIL and DFIL have helped financially but this time we are on our own so those locations with full ddp are a no go this time. I've spent an awful longtime weighing up the pros and cons of onsite versus offsite. I looked up every possible scenario but I just can't not stay onsite. But I really like the idea of staying offsite sans ddp to experience offsite dining. So we have decided on doing both! Split stay. Financially more viable as well.

In 2012 we booked with Virgin(newbie error), 2015 was booked with Charter Travel. They were great but I was pretty sure I can do it all DIY. Budget is a big factor and every penny is going to count. So this is a completely DIY trip.

So now the arduous task of where and what order. I worried that doing Disney first would leave the rest of the holiday as a bit of anti climax. After weighing things up we are saving the best until last and resisting going to Disney until the last part. Dates were decided, to be from Sunday 14th to Wednesday 31st. This would be when flight prices going by last year would be at their best, a day either side added massively to costs.

We wanted a night or two onsite at a Universal Resort Hotel to make use of the Free FOLP passes. We stayed one night at the Hard Rock Hotel last time and it was a real highlight. Doing so for this trip was a must. Back in January just after we got Evie's diagnosis, we decided we were going so I had a quick look on Travel Republic (used last time with no trouble), not expecting to see prices but the prices were up and incredibly good. I had a rough idea of dates we wanted to go so without really thinking, booked 2 nights at Loews Royal Pacific Resort (the not thinking bit will be explained later). Much cheaper than the Hard Rock Hotel with the same benefits. These two nights I booked for £308 with a £1 deposit. (Looking now it would be £430). I booked this for Sunday 14th to Tuesday 16th. We should have come here straight from the airport. I say should as plans change!

As I had booked this such a longtime in advance as with all things plans changed a bit! Instead of flying on the 14th which is a Sunday we thought blow it lets fly on the Saturday to give us an extra day! As of the time of writing I haven't yet booked flights but it shouldn't be too different in price.

So where to stay once we land in Orlando? I really want to make use of the extra day. Our first day on our last trip felt like a waste. We collected the car, went to Walmart(Walmart shop, the worlds biggest anti climax) and then relaxed. Not happening this time! We will be up early so make use of the day in a park. Seaworld is the perfect choice to start off so I had a look at Seaworld Partner Hotels. I have booked the Doubletree by Hilton at Seaworld. We get the bonus of having quick queue to use on some rides at Seaworld which is a big bonus. This was booked with Virgin Holidays room only for an amazing £74. This includes the resort fee and parking. Considering parking at Seaworld is $20 anyway I'm really pleased with this price. We can walk and save on parking and have quick queue! We will then check into Royal Pacific Resort after our day at Seaworld.

**edit. This has now changed. We are no longer doing Seaworld on the first day as we want a no rush full day there and I think we'd be tired on the first day. I've gone for the slightly cheaper Rosen Inn closest to Universal. Just a place to sleep first night.

***edit all changed again. See later

So where to next after Universal? Lake Buena Vista or International Drive? This is going to be for 5 nights and the chance to help with the budget. None of the LBV budget hotels really grabbed me. Clarion Inn was a maybe but one of the big things about this section of the holiday was all the offsite places to eat at that I'm desperate to try. Most of these seemed to be more around the International Drive area so it made more sense to look there. I looked at the Avanti resort but the budget place that always seemed to get the best reviews and feedback on The Dibb was the Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando. I booked this as hotel only with Virgin Holidays. This covers all resort fees. £224 for 5 nights. I'm really looking forward to this part of the holiday as it will be completely new. More to come later on plans for those 5 days.

Edit** This has also changed. We are now having 5 nights instead at Universal Cabana Bay Resort. I love the look of this place and think the girls will love it here. Nothing against the Rosen but was slightly put off by things I have read recently.

So now on to the biggest decision of all. Where on Disney property to stay? Last year we had a quick look around All Star Music and we really liked the look of it. This was on the off chance we'd go again. I would happily stay there but the more I thought about it , that with the free qsdp being offered at the Disney moderates and $200 giftcard we'd get 2 meals a day, snack credits, refill mug as well, I'd need less spending money so financially more viable in the end I think.

I looked at Caribbean Beach Resort but I worried about the size of the resort and didn't really want to pay extra for a preferred room. Port Orleans was only slightly more which surprised me as in the past it was always way more. I loved the resort when we went in 2006 and getting the boat to Downtown Disney(Springs) is one of my favourite things. It had to be there. Which one though?! I initially leaned towards French Quarter as it was smaller but I have real soft spot for Riverside. I finally decided on the day I booked! I had received loads of quotes from every company you could think of. Some similar prices, some ridiculous. In the end I went with Orlando Attractions. Best quote, always quick to respond to emails as well. I've booked for 10 nights with free qsdp, $200 giftcard and 14 day Ultimate tickets. This will be costing £2775. I got quotes £600-£700 more than that. Very happy with the price. I got my Disney reservation number the same day.

I had told Kelly we would be booking Disney All Star Music. I planned not to tell her and was just going to drive into the resort and surprise her on the day. This plan lasted 2 and half hours! I couldn't do it so I sent a screenshot of the booking from the Disney website. She texted back 5 minutes later saying they spelt Evie Mae wrong! No mention of anything else! I was fuming! 20 minutes later she texted back. She saw I'd booked Port Orleans Riverside. She was really pleased! I'm still really annoyed with myself that I didn't leave it as a surprise for when we got there.

So that's the 18 nights spread over 4 hotels! Bit mad really but it's going to be amazing! I'm hoping it won't be too much for us all the moving about.

WARNING: KELLY DO NOT READ! Edit. Ok to read now!

All our other attraction tickets have been booked through Orlando Attractions as well.

We have 14 day 2 park tickets for Universal, if Volcano Bay is open when we go I will change them to 3 park tickets that I assume they will do. We will spend our 2 full days in the Universal parks.

We also have Discovery Cove to look forward to! This is a first for us. Kelly has always wanted to do this but due to the expense we haven't done it. I really wanted to book this for her. It's our 10 year wedding anniversary in June so she will find out then! I have Discovery Cove booked for Wednesday May 17th. I booked this early on in case we get some bad weather and we have to rearrange. With this we have Aquatica and Seaworld included in the tickets. We totally underestimated Seaworld last time. In 2012 we were done by 2.30pm( DMIL and DFIL were anyway so that meant we were all done) so I planned the same for 2015. We missed loads so we will have a proper day there this time. We really enjoyed Aquatica as well so we are looking forward to our day there again.

We aren't doing Busch Gardens as I'm the only coaster fan and we didn't have a great time there last time for one reason or another. We also will have a day at Kennedy Space Centre. Been on my list as I'm a massive fan of anything Apollo so I'm really looking forward to this. All the non Disney tickets were around about £1300. All of this will be done while we are at Royal Pacific Resort and then Rosen Inn@ Pointe Orlando so the 10 days at Disney will be Disney only.

Flights and car hire and insurance.

At the time of writing I'm yet to book flights. I'm waiting for the 11 month window to open. DW would prefer Virgin but I'm looking at BA. They have some great fly drive deals. I like the ease of Disney Springs check in with Virgin but if BA is a lot cheaper than we will fly with them. I basically have a price in mind and whoever is closest get the gig. If we are going with Virgin then we will get the car hire with Alamo Brits like we did last time. I have provisionally booked a full size car for 18 days for £450. This is pay on arrival. I didn't want the price to rise while I wait to see which flights I book. I will cancel this if we go BA with no charge. I will also cancel and pre pay if the price stays the same and we fly with Virgin. I'd rather have it paid for rather than on arrival. The mini van was great last time but loads more money. If we are with BA then we will have car hire with Avis. I have signed up to Avis preferred already so we can skip the queues and go straight to the garage. At the moment I'm leaning towards BA as you do a deposit for a fly drive rather than paying up front like with Virgin. UPDATE BOOKED. SEE POST 57

I have booked travel insurance with flexicover insurance. Pretty standard but does cover end supplier failure which I've been advised to get when doing a DIY holiday.

Food.

Big part of the holiday for me! This is something I probably over plan! Another food report will run alongside this trip report. You can find the last one And A Diet Coke Please. I Don't Want To Get Fat HERE. I can't believe how many people have read it! So this trip food wise will be a bit different. We are starting away from Disney so it gives us a chance to try many of the offsite places I've read so much about and always wanted to try.

When we arrive we might have a chance for an evening meal but it depends on how tired we are from the flight.

The next day when I'm sure we will be up early I'd like to have an early breakfast at an IHOP/Denny's type place. Village Inn is just across the road from the Doubletree. At Seaworld I'm hoping after a big breakfast it will just be snacks during the day. That evening depending on tiredness maybe a Citywalk location after we check in at RPR (new Chocolate Factory?) As for eating in the Universal theme parks over the 2 park days we are there I won't have any real plan. We may get the dining plan on which we did last time. It gave us a quick service meal, drink and snack. One thing that will DEFINITELY happen is for our second night there we will drive off Universal property to Teak Neighbourhood Bar and Grill rather than a place on Citywalk. I was desperate to go last time but didn't get the chance. That ain't happening next time!

Once we move to the Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando and we hit some of the other theme parks I plan on getting a big breakfast somewhere daily, Golden Corral etc and then only have a snack in the parks or bring food with us as c/s meals in the parks can add up. We will have a big evening meal out. There are several venues that we wish to try. We have 5 nights there so it will any 5 from Longhorn, Millers Ale House, Dave and Busters, Outback, Bahama Breeze and Olive Garden. The new 4Rivers will be open in Kissimmee so that is a MUST. I need to do a proper BBQ place. I have looked at Bubbalous Bodacious BBQ but think it will be 4Rivers. To be honest there are a million places I'd like to try. Better have the elasticated waste band pants for the flight home.

Next on to Disney. This will be a bit different for us as we usually have had the dining plan. I have considered upgrading but as Evie Mae is turning 10 on our second day there turns here into an adult so it adds a bit to the cost. I'm not ruling out upgrading. So it will be qsdp for us. I'm really looking forward to being near a proper food court! Don't get me started on OKW and its lacklustre food options. As much as I loved SSR that wasn't great either. Wolfgang Puck, Earl Of Sandwich and Be Our Guest(lunch not breakfast) will all be visited. I'm not really making definite plans. I'm just going to look up the different places so we can make a decision on the day depending on what park and where we are. I'm sort of looking forward to not being tied down to a load of adrs as it can be restricting on your time. We made a decision that we'd book 3 Disney places to eat at. Donald's Safari breakfast at Tusker House is a must. We've been twice before and for us it's the best character meal by far. I want to get a third picture of the girls and Mickey.

Updated 3/6/16. I have decided to upgrade to ddp.

We will also do Crystal Palace probably breakfast and also 50's Prime Time Cafe at Disney Hollywood Studios. Not for everyone but we loved it. I do have a $50 off when you spend $100 for House Of Blues so I may book that but that's not a certainty. I did plan on Ohana after our disaster of meal in 2015 but we've decided against it as quite expensive.

For the 2017 qsdp plan you now get 2 snack credits(I know you lose the desserts but they were rubbish). I'm going to make sure we use these properly this time. We've always wasted loads on panic buying on our final day. Not being on the full ddp may help with this. I'm going to make sure I know where all the good stuff is! I'm finally going to have an Ice Cream from The Plaza on Main Street which I have said the last two times and not done. Those cheeseburger egg rolls from Adventureland have my name on them too!

.
Spends.

Not going to be as much as I'd like but being self employed I don't get holiday pay so have to cover loss of earnings while away. I'm going to budget $220 a day for 3 days to include Seaworld and Universal and $200 a day for the 5 days at Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando. This will cover all food, snacks, parking and petrol. For our 10 days at Disney I'm allowing $100 a day but we have most things already paid for food and parking wise so I'm guessing I won't spend all of that. I don't spend much on shopping on myself so not worried about that. If I get more then great but I'm sure my budget is easily manageable even if we overspend the first week.

For the girls, they will have the $200 giftcard and Kelly will be putting some aside for them as well as herself. I'm sure Nanny and Grandad will give them some as well. I'm guessing they will probably have more than me!

Shopping.

The obligatory shopping day(half day) will have to happen. I'm allowing this for our last day before we hit Disney.

One things for certain it won't be at the Florida Mall. Been 3 times and I always think it's no different from going shopping at home apart from the awesome food court. Will study up on the outlet malls at either end of international drive. I'm going to pick the one with the best food court. Shopping will be for Kelly but the girls might do a bit as well. Me? Parked up in the food court.(just seen the outlet mall at the north end of Idrive has a Five Guys).

Potentially I'd like to look at a day out at Clearwater Beach. I'd love to do that but Kelly isn't a beach person and I don't know where we'd fit it in so I doubt it but you never know!

Diet.

Before last trip, over the space of a year I lost around about 45lbs. I put 6-7lbs back on whilst there but quickly shifted it once back. I've managed somehow to maintain that weight. I'm really hoping to lose another 10lbs before going but I can't ever seem to get below a certain point. I did diet updates on my last pre trip report that helped so I may do the same again.

So that's all for now (all, I hear you laugh, it's the size of a novel) will be back with Evie Mae updates, diet news and itinerary when that is sorted.

“!Por favor manténgase alejado de las puertas”

Thanks for reading!

What an amazing pre trip report! I loved your other 2 so really looking forward to reading this next one, in fact I might go and re read them now! Evie Maes news must have come at you like a tonne of bricks but I'm really glad to hear how well she is coping with it😃
Your plans sound fantastic you're all going to have a blast! As for the DAS card I'm no expert but when we went last year with my OH's family, his nephew is autistic so my SIL went to Guest Services at each park and registered him. He got a pass for each park for the duration of our holiday so no need to keep going back each time and they included all 10 of us on it. I have to say, Universal, SeaWorld and Busch Gardens were the best as you didn't need a return time as long as the stand by queue was less than 60 minutes. Even at Disney with your 3 FPs it's definitely manageable so I hope you get the same treatment we did!
Your budget sounds definitely doable. If you look over at the shopping forum I posted a couple of days ago what we spent on food for 2 weeks last year. We were at a villa the first week and onsite at CSR the second but with no dining plan so everything was OOP and for the 4 of us spent less than $2000. This included quite a few TS meals!
Oh and we left the holiday as a surprise until the morning we flew. It nearly killed me but I'm so glad we did it 😁
Looking forward to hearing any updates especially about Evie Mae 😃

Thanks for reading Shows how much I know. It's a DAS card We have a very important hospital appointment next in 2 weeks at Great Ormond Street where hopefully we can find out if her vision is deteriorating or not, we think it has significantly in the last few months but the experts will tell us. Will update.

So sorry to read of Evie's diagnosis. My friend's mum has Cone Dystrophy and up until recently was able to drive. I hope Evie is as lucky as her.

I'm so jealous of your 18 nights! We're going for 16 but I'd love to stay longer.

I think you're doing the right thing doing Disney last, you'd pine for it if you did it first. Great deal on the Seaworld hotel. Glad you opted for the Rosen Inn; if we were staying on I-Drive I'd do the same.

I thought the moderates were really fairly priced this year, when you consider you have food covered for 4 people, £2775 is a bargain, especially when you take off the cost of the tickets! We like the All Stars too, we could have saved about £500 if we'd opted for staying at one with free breakfast upgraded to DPP, so something we might consider in future.

I'm really excited at the thought of a QS dining report from you.

Fabulous pre-trippy. So sorry to hear about Evie Mae, and I hope everything goes well on your next appointment. We are doing an 18 night trip this time as well, but we're starting at Disney as it's out first time on-site. Our flights are into Miami with Thomas Cook, and we made substantial savings by doing this (PE on return - I need the luggage) Don't know until we've been though whether we will like the drive I've been planning since last July for this year's trip, but I've never been as organised as you seem to be

Thanks for reading she won't ever be able to drive unfortunately

It's a really good deal for us at POR with everything taken care off.

Won't just be a QSDP food report

Our flights are into Miami with Thomas Cook, and we made substantial savings by doing this (PE on return - I need the luggage) Don't know until we've been though whether we will like the drive I've been planning since last July for this year's trip, but I've never been as organised as you seem to be

Thanks for reading I'm organised but over the top organised
