18 cruise passengers robbed on Bahamas Excursion

I found this posted on another cruise line forum. I don't want to worry anyone, but thought people should be aware. I'm glad to know prior to our cruise in April 2010.

This article is in the Bahamas Tribune, involving RCCL & DCL passengers.

we are not getting off at nassau as there isn't much to do there for us with a 2 year old so just chilling on the boat. Must have been traumatic for the people who were robbed. Interesting that disney sent someone down there to help striagnt away and the other cruiseline didn't

DCL has full kids club activities while in Port. DD6 stayed on board in the kids club while Mum and I took DD3 for a walk around Nassau. After reading things like the above, I was pleasantly surprised by Nassau. For a Carribean port we thought it was actually quite clean and well maintained. I've certainly seen alot worse! The shops are mostly duty free but fine for a wander round. We certainly didn't get hasseled. We did avoid the very touristy market but the shops were fine. The ships dock right in the centre of town so you don't even need a taxi to have a look. It is also nice to have time on the ship when it is quieter.

You will love the cruise. We couldn't believe how high the standards were on DCL.

We stayed on board until after lunch as there were so many activities at the kids clubs that they wanted to do. We do pop off for a walk in the afternoon, but didn't think much of Nassau and were back on the ship within the hour.

Hated Nassau and certainly didn't feel safe there so I have to say this doesn't surprise me. We couldn't wait to get back on the ship!

Won't be getting off again, we will enjoy all the Wonder has to offer instead and save ourselves for Castaway Cay.

We didn't think much to Nassau either and don't really think we'd get off the boat there if we went again.

Saying that I'm glad we had a look round when we went, for the experience.

We always visit the Atlantis hotel when in Nassau. It's a stunning place full of wealth. I'm my honest opinion most of the carib is a bit of a dump. Doesn't stop us cruising there tho as we mainly go for the ships, not the ports. But I thought it was pretty largly known not to take valuables ashore. We always leave watches, rings etc in the cabin safe when going ashore in the Carib.
