We normally get a cab - it's a flat fee into Midtown. Just make sure you get one from an official dispatcher.
I love the view appearing of the city! /Mo |

We've used a cab, and also Carmel Limo who were around the same price and met us at the gate.

We used a shuttle service as there were only 2 of us and not much luggage.

I have just booked a return shuttle service through Expedia from JFK to our hotel on Park Ave (return) for £64.44 for two of us, it takes about an hour. I know this is a good price from when we last went we paid this price each way in a yellow cab. After the long flight I just want to get to the hotel to shower etc.

We did the air train and subway. No problems whatsoever and with NY traffic, depending on the time of day possibly quicker than a cab.

So on top of the fixed rate for the cab how much would we give for tipping and are there any other tolls or taxes to consider ?

When we priced it up in February it was a fixed fare of approx $52 for the cab, it would be a total of $70 including tolls/tip. We decided to do the air train/subway which was $25 for a 10 journey ticket, we only used 8 so it worked out $3 or so each way pp. We then bought a weekly subway pass for $33 each.

Look at this link.
sightseeingpass/en/new-york They do new york passes BUT the options include shuttle service to airports. we found them to be the cheapest with good options. We booked the flex pass.It gives you a menu of options. the more options, the higher the cost. Included was 72hrs of hop on and hop off uptown and downtown bus tours as 1 option. We used another of our options for a return shuttle from our hotel to the airport. The options didn't include the Empire State Building BUT we got a $40 credit for use on a partner website which we logged onto from a link AND used this credit to book ESB tickets-so Happy days! currently there is 22% off adult tix and 30% off children tix from this company if booked before 31/7 for later travel! JUST MAKE SURE YOU ACTIVATE YOUR 72hr hop on etc BY VISITING the Sightseeing tour desk at the train station near times square (penn st?) I cannot remember the name it wasn't grand central. There are other co's like big blue bus and citysightseeingny. They offer very god deals to but ona day to day basis. We didn't want to 'cram' in everything each day, preferring just to do 1 or 2 options daily. we did statue of liberty using the staten island ferry as it cost nothing and the hop on downtown bus took us straight there . a bit of planning and you won't even need transport to get to places.we used the 72 hr option buses to go everywhere plus a metro card! and the options to get the shuttle service to/from the airport.
