My DGS moved to secondary school last September, he also has an EHCP. Originally he was accepted into the local school but at the last minute (June) our family was told that they could not meet his needs.
Queue panic! My son worked with the local authority to find a school that was mainstream but also had specialist staff. He does now have to travel 45 mins each way but financial support or transport is available. Only you know the level of support your son needs and has been having over the last few years. MY DGS has come on 'leaps and bounds' over the last 8 months, even with lock down. He attends main stream lessons but always has a teacher with him in case it gets too much. This is a 'Cabin' school which means there is a building available for students with additional needs, a quiet space for him to relax and well trained staff. May be helpful to see if there is one in your area, the local authority normally has a list online. Depends how well you think your child can cope and, as always, there's never a 'one size fits all'. I know 1000% that if someone isn’t with him or on a small group situation he will become distracted his attention spans small
I asked what happens when he falls behind and they said then he falls behind |

Definitely not helpful at all I'd ask to speak to their designated SEN member of staff in charge to see if you can get a better response.
It was once my DGS's new school saw his ECHP that they said they would not take him. They said that they couldn't provide a full time member of staff to be with him all the time and didn't have a suitable space for him to go to should he become distressed. TBH I think they decided they didn't want to but can't prove that. Has his primary school got an up to date EHCP that has been passed to the new school so that they are fully aware of his needs? I think your other alternative is to speak to your local authority to discuss your concerns as the last thing you want is for him to go to a school that is not suitable or cannot provide the help he needs. Sorry you're going through this. Jill |

That is inexcusable in my opinion. I thought the way my daughter was treated at secondary was horrific but she hadn't been diagnosed with autism in year 7 and didn't have any identified special needs as she could cope in her tiny primary school. She was very good at masking for awhile.
When they finally started to take it seriously, I was shocked to realise that the SEN coordinator was also an English teacher with a full class load. Absolutely shocking how little they offered her. She basically was told to go hide in the nurse's side room if she was overwhelmed. I would be very cautious of sending my child to a school that was so unhelpful before your son even starts. The school system in Florida isn't great but no school would get away with that attitude.

Does the ECHP have a number of hour stated? We were advised to get that included as that measd they have to provide help for that number of hours.

So sorry to hear about lack of support. Even if number of hours is stated support is usually shared. He should be given support for when he is unable to cope in break times as well as class. I would ask to see SENCO and someone from the LA to find out how they are going to meet his needs. They are required to provide your child with an education, not good enough to just say they cannot do it.
