Wot no Disney - Well just a smidgeon - July 2018 mainly offsite trip report - Day 2

Wot no Disney - Well just a smidgeon - July 2018 mainly offsite trip report - Day 2 - Don't Step on the Stingray!

The index is here

Wednesday 4th July

Slightly later rise this morning, It was Discovery cove day. Ds had been very much looking forward to this. He even contributed pocket money savings to the tickets he was that keen.

It is a great choice for the 4th of July. We got an Uber and arrived just after 8, the line was already out the door for checking in, they were very efficient though, so it didn’t take long at all

We headed straight to breakfast and the lines were out the door. This took longer than the check in. The food was good, normal hot breakfast stuff available plus fruit and pastries. Here’s our plates.

Next up off to get lotioned up so you look even more pasty than normal and collect your vests or wetsuits. Last time I just wore a vest but this time I went for a wetsuit, it was a bit of a struggle to get it on but it meant less lotion and last time I burnt my shoulders with the life jacket rubbing so it was worth the short term pain getting it on. The other two just went for the vests.

Ds was super excited about the grand reef now that he was a strong swimmer. He loved it and was all over the place, He thought the really deep parts were amazing. Dh can’t swim and is not keen on water so he stayed in the shallow parts with Ds and I advising where to go. He did well though and did put his face in the water to see which we never thought he would have done. I thought it was great but I was worried about stepping on a sting ray. It was freezing though and the wetsuit certainly helped with that.

Finally, we managed to persuade Ds to do a little more exploring and we went to explore warmer waters before the lazy river and relaxed with the pool noodles.

It was 4 years earlier that we had been here and the lazy river was more like the crazy stressful river trying to keep Ds close to me. This time it was lovely and we swam round together exploring while Dh hung around in the warm water.

The rain came on quite heavy for a bit about 12.30 so we went for lunch.
We had salmon and Hawaiian chicken which was nice and fruit for pudding.

Ds was shattered after his 1.5 hours in the grand reef and fell asleep with his head on the table while we waited out the storm.

After lunch the temperature was great as it remained a bit overcast. DS was keen for some more time in the lazy river and we took the camera with us this time.

We caught up with Dh and had drinks in the pool with the seats before Ds wanted to do the lazy river again. It was so much fun. I’m sure Dh was loving the alone time with a few beers.

It was a fantastically chilled out day and the snacks and drinks were good throughout the day. Soda, icees, Dh had a couple of beers, warm chocolate chip cookies, crisps etc.
We left well after 5 all thoroughly shattered and got an Uber back to the hotel. I’d go again, especially if I was there on the 4th July again

Ds was unsurprisingly shattered after Discovery Cove so wasn’t too hungry or up for being out for long. Since it was the 4th July I’d thought it might have been a good idea to book somewhere nice for dinner so I went for Maggianos, they had emailed a voucher for $10 off, we had been before and enjoyed it and it was just across the road.

I’m glad we’d booked as it was heaving in the lobby. We only waited about 2 minutes for the table.
I had a peach Bellini which was awesome and Dh had a Peroni. Ds had a lemonade.

We had warm bread with oil, Parmesan and black pepper for dipping. Very nice.

Ds and I decided to share the chicken saltimboca. It was gorgeous and just the right amount for us.

Dh had the gnocchi with Italian sausage. It had copious amounts of cheese but he loved it. I had a piece and it was nice sort of reminded me of the M&S Italian sausage pasta richer and nicer.

Ds was flagging and we were not that hungry so no pudding.
We used our voucher. Our server was lovely so we left $75. Our most expensive meal so far but still good value I thought.

We persuaded Ds to make the short walk up to Walgreens and we bought some mint M&Ms for the room. By the time we got back the weather had really turned and was pretty horrible so we watched the lightning and fireworks going off in lots of different directions in bed before crashing out after another busy day.

No step count today
Highlights, Ds- The Great Reef, Me – The Lazy River, DH – Serenity Bay.

Another great day at Discovery Cove. Been a few years since we visited but would love to do it again.

It was a great day. That hotel fascinates me, it's huge and you seem to be able to see it from everywhere.

We would too, hopefully maybe next summer.

It is so chilled there, it wasn't like the 4th of July. We had it booked for summer 2020 but had to cancel. Thanks for reading.

Thanks Joan, we've been twice and each time it wiped Ds out completely. Even now that he is a teen I still wouldn't make any kind of plans for the night after a Discovery Cove visit. Although, hopefully he is too big now to fall asleep in his lunch

Yay for a Discovery Cove day. We love the lazy river too. It’s just so lovely and relaxing and it looks like you did well with your meals too.

We haven’t tried Maggiano’s before, it looks totally delicious- and that peach Bellini is right up my alley. I will add that to the list for our next trip. What a great day.

It was great. I’ve added a non swim day to my list of things for next summer.

The frozen cocktails at Maggianos are awesome. I had a swirl one on a previous visit

The food there has also been consistently good.

Discovery Cove looked fun, we still have never made it! I could murder for one of those peach Bellinis even if it’s feeling a bit chilly here this morning and it’s not even 10am
