It's partly taxes, partly supply and demand . I've started my transatlantic flights in DUblin and and Gothenburg via London and paid £300 pp less than starting in London on the same flights.
With Ryanair fares starting at £10 or less it's often well worthwhile.
My favourite was the trip where I flew to Dublin early morning spent the day doing stuff I needed to do in Dublin anyway, started the transatlantic with an evening flight Dublin to London and then stayed at a Gatwick terminal hotel and the next morning flew on the direct flight (my luggage stayed at Gatwick and I checked it in the next morning) all for £300 less so more than covered my extra flight and hotel even flying solo... for a family the savings obviously would be even better.

Next summer we are flying direct into Fort Lauderdale rather than indirect , at £410 it was a bit more than Miami but a shorter drive and a nicer spot to overnight before the drive whilst still a very decent saving .

There have been some good deals on Manchester flights this year but definitely not always the case, we've had some bargain flights from London In the last few years too. For last August we paid just over £300 each indirect from Heathrow.

There is no definite pattern but a lot of the time you'll find it's the other way. There is more competition in London with more airlines whereas places like Manchester only have virgin and tc flying direct to Mco.

We're essex based so obviously fly out of London is ideal... we booked Man-Lon-Orlando going and Orlando-Lon-Man coming back (but as you change in London Heathrow/Gatwick we won't take the Heathrow-Manchester on the return). It was £550pp... to do direct London to Orlando I couldn't find less than £965! Yes there will be expense of getting to Manchester for the first flight but that'll be minimal! Crazy!

Just booked...

So, I've bitten the bullet and booked...

£745 per person, Heathrow to Miami, end of July for two weeks, including a 12 seat minivan for the duration...

Couldn't resist at that price, as the car hire section alone will be around £1000, so making it around £600 direct to Miami...

Sit back, relax - we're coming home!

In addition to Miami, also look at Fort Lauderdale (which is closer to Orlando).

I've booked direct flights LGW-FLL outbound and MCO-LGW return with BA for under £650pp.

We're having 3 days around Fort Lauderdale then driving up for 2 weeks at Disney before flying back from there

You will need to ask them to short check your luggage on the way home, or your luggage will end up in Manchester !

Others may be along to advise how to do this better. We had quite a lot of problems last year when the MAN-LHR leg of our journey was cancelled on the way out due to fog. We drove to LHR and just flew the second leg. This was ok with BA as they had cancelled our flight. However, on the way home there was lots of discussion at check in as to how they couldn't short check the bags to LHR as our ticket technically was to MAN. They had to print and re-print the luggage tags quite a few times and get a Manager over to do this.

I've just re-read your post about changing in London, ignore me ! lol
