Mobile TUI hand baggage - any tips?

At a measly 5 kg I wondered if anyone had any top tips on how I can cut back? My laptop weighs 4 kg on its own so it’s going to be a boring flight if I can’t take much else! DHs rucksack is full of the essential stuff such as money and passports and DS8 has just enough to take his iPad.
If we buy stuff in the airport how do they deal with that? Is that supposed to be part of your 5kg or is it extra ?

You get weighed at check in so anything you buy at the airport after security isn't counted

So I could just load myself up in duty free and carry that on without any issue re weight?

You’re also allowed a handbag, can’t you put the essentials in there and let DH carry your laptop?.

I'd be careful with doing that,

tui/destinations/i...gage-allowance

'Things like laptops, handbags and items bought at the airport must fit within your 1 piece of hand luggage.'

I've never flown tui before, and I thought most airlines allowed things like handbags to be carried separately. I suppose if what you buy fits into the hand luggage, they won't check the weight again though.

We are travelling with Tui tomorrow, so I'll have a look around and spy if they are strict with other passengers

Apparently not with Tui -

tui/destinations/i...gage-allowance

I don't know about flying to the US, but we flew to Iceland with them in March and they were very strict about hand luggage weights. All hand luggage had to be weighed at bag drop, and if it was over the 5kg they were making people rejig into suitcases or actually check the hand luggage in. There were quite a few irate people!

I wouldn't risk it myself. Do you have a tablet that you can take instead of a laptop? I just take my phone and Kindle fire now, covers most things.

I would really appreciate it if you could !
I’m not planning on buying huge amounts in duty free, just some reading material, maybe some sweets and probably a few toiletries. They’ll fit into my carry on no problem but it’ll then probably be over the 5 kg limit

I just took absolute essentials when I last flew with TUI (Thomson when I flew). Hand luggage was weighed at check in and staff were strict.

I took my iPad, kindle, purse, documents and phone in my handbag. That was pretty much it.

I meant, if the essentials DH is carrying (money, passports etc,) are in the handbag, this would free up DH’s rucksack for said laptop
