Passport expiry
Hi. My son's passport expires in April 2019. We fly out in December 2018. From what I can see, we do not need 6 months validity following the return date. Can any of you guys help with confirmation that I am correct?

You are correct. If it’s a British passport you only need it valid for your trip.

Or in fact with a passport from about 140 nations. Official confirmation here.

it only needs to be valid for the duration of the trip so no requirement to replace. But you are aware that if you apply upto 6 months before it expires the new one is extended to expire as if you had applied in the april. So if you are worried you could get a new one around october, but if you do you will need a new esta for him.

Yes indeed but as you say with a valid passport and (hopefully ) a valid ESTA I'd be inclined to renew P/P after the holiday.

We had a massive panic when we landed at Miami a few weeks ago.
My DSs passport runs out mid September 18. I hadn't renewed it as I intend to get him an adult one after he turns 16 tomorrow. Knowing you only need length of stay on a UK passport we thought nothing of it until entering his passport into the immigration automatic machines. A message immediately flashed up saying passport not valid as there was less than six months on it. As you can imagine all our jaws hit the floor... Thank God within seconds the message disappeared and the machine continued the process and was OK. |

As DD ESTA is valid she will travel in December with a passport expiring in February.
We have done it before last time her passport expired and was no problem. |

Thought the window was 9 months before it expires. Has that changed now?

Just be clear though it is the US we are talking about her. Other nations differ as I found out to my detriment last summer!
