If you look direct with BA you can select the right option for you. BA now offer hand baggage only tickets as well as tickets that include a bag so make sure you select what’s best for you. If everyone needs a bag it’s always cheaper to buy a ticket that includes a bag than it is to buy hand baggage only and add the bag on later!

Also for those asking about transferring between LHR and LGW there is a national express bus that goes direct between the two but I would recommend checking the price of what OP did and see if you can hire a car one way. Minimum connection time for flights between the two airports is 3 hours so you should have plenty time! You could also look at booking this through BA and maybe get a package price, if you weren’t already booking hotel with them, adding a car to a flight only ticket can help reduce the price (even if you don’t pick it up!)

I got these on Travel Trolley there were a few that were cheaper with no checked bag, and this price including 1 checked bag.

We did this connection last year and booked a taxi through blackberry cars. They were waiting for us at arrivals, and didn't make any fuss when they had to wait for me coming through late on the special assistance buggy (cleaner had locked the exit door for buggy so had to sit waiting 10 mins trying to get out!).
Think journey took about 1 hr lgw-lhr and we'd factored in lots of transfer time so had leisurely brunch at lhr once we got there.
We had 4 cases (away a month and did the usual empty suitcase in a case on way out for spends) and a wheelchair and they made sure they had car big enough for us.
TBH We were a bit anxious about it before hand but if price was right we'd do it again- not always a lot of options from Newcastle.
Ps it worked out cheaper than bus and easier for us with wheelchair.

We’ve done JER-LGW LHR-MIA and found the transfer no issue at all.
However, we landed at Gatwick in the evening and flew from Heathrow the following morning so we had plenty of leeway.
We used Apple cars I think and stayed the night at the Premier Inn Bath Road.
Even with the taxi fare and the hotel stay (although we probably would have stayed the night before anyway) it was an enormous saving

* having read the post above, I think it was blackberry!
