Celebrating Retirement Tour October 2019 - Day 8 Thur 10 Oct - Aerial Tramway and Pioneertown
Breakfast is not included at The Coyote Inn so headed off in search of something to eat. Ruby's Diner was the restaurant of choice and it didn't disappoint, in fact I would go so far as to say its the best omelette I've ever had and once again huge portions.
The plan today was Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, Joshua Tree National Park and Pioneertown. However, the Coyote Inn is such a chilled place we were slow to get ourselves going. We wanted to call in Walmart first for an american sat nav, water, a few snacks and a black sheet to use to cover the luggage, as the SUV didn't have a cover over the boot space as I believe is common with US hire cars, so we both decided we would miss out Joshua Tree National Park as we didn't want to rush trying to fit everything in. Headed to the Tramway first. It was really quiet, parked really close to the entrance and got straight on a waiting cable car. The journey up the mountain was amazing, and even though it wasn't the clearest of days the view was incredible. Very cold at the top though, we definitely needed hoodies. We spent a good few hours here, but had to tear ourselves away if we wanted to fit in Pioneertown and get back to Coyote Inn before dark. A really scenic drive which took about 40 minutes. Pioneertown was really quaint, great photo opportunities as it was deserted. You really could imagine pistols at dawn here. Stayed about 30 minutes, then headed back to Palm Springs. Tonight was Village Fest where they close off the main street to traffic every Thursday evening, set up stalls selling crafts and street food and have several places where live music is playing. It was a brilliant atmosphere and we grabbed something to eat from the burger stall. I had beefburger with onions and Brian had pulled pork, both delicious. After a couple of hours walking round, shopping and listening to the music it was back to Coyote Inn to sort out the cases for moving on to Lone Pine tomorrow. Night all. I'm so gutted we couldn't squeeze in a visit to Palm Springs, I was desperate to go up the Aerial Tram! Absolutely stunning views.
Pioneer Town looks really fun too, it looks like its straight out of a Wild West film set! What a great idea to close off the roads to cars once a week and have a market stalls, will have to remember that for when we next visit |
