Celebrating Retirement Tour October 2019 - Day 3 Saturday 5 October - San Diego

Woke early again after a reasonable night's sleep and took our time getting showered and dressed. San Diego is one of our very favourite places in the workd, and as this was our 3rd visit didn't feel like we had to rush around anywhere.

Breakfast buffet in the hotel was OK and we were ready to head out by 9.30am. Walked down to the promenade, starting at the Star of India ship that is moored there, and walking all the way down along the waterfront to Seaport Village past the USS Midway and the kissing statue.

We stopped for a drink at the Pier Cafe which is built on stilts out on the water and decided that we needed munchies to go with our drinks so ordered a portion of fries and giant onion rings. OMG they were so good.

We then carried on down to the Convention Centre and Petco Park and got serious yacht envy at some of the boats in the marina.

Next it was a walk through the Gaslamp Quarter, stopping for a drink at Union Kitchen and Tap where Brian had a beer flight and I had a white sangria.

Our plan then was to carry on to Westfield Horton Plaza shopping centre for a little bit of retail therapy, only to find that it had very sadly closed down which is such a shame as we remember it being a really nice shopping centre last time we were here.

We both had aching feet by now so decided to head back to the hotel for a couple of hours chilling time before heading out again for something to eat later. Not a bad view of the bay from the hotel balcony 😁 (the ship at the bottom of the street is the Star of India referred to earlier). We were greeted by a gorgeous sunset when we both woke up after an hour of dozing.

We needed food again now but didn't want to go too far so decided on Karl Schloss Brewery which was just round the corner from the hotel. We both had burgers which were delicious and the bill with 2 beers and tip came to $42. A really nice place with a great atmosphere 👍

Waddled back to the hotel and pj's on. Walked almost 22,000 steps today so our weary bones are telling us it's bed time. Night all.

Enjoying re-visiting SAN Diego again through your report . I used to work on a project based there but not been back for a few years

Sad to hear Horton Plaza has closed - like you i really liked the shops there but it did always seem very quiet.

Looking forward to your next instalment

We went to San Diego for the first time in November 2017 and really liked the city. Horton Plaza though - there were literally just a few shops there, including a very strange second hand bookstore which was full of interesting characters! I’m not surprised it’s closed but really a shame given the history.

I think we ate in the same place at Gas Lamp too, our hotel was just around the corner.

Seaport Village they were meant to be closing and redeveloping - we liked it and didn’t think it needed it!
