Woohoo, this time in 4 weeks we will be in New York

Just caught up with your plans, sounds like so much fun. My in-laws are heading off to Myrtle Beach after they leave New York on the 22nd (we fly home ont eh 21st - boo!) so they will be gone when you arrive, I think.

As far as Jacksonville, St Augustine, Daytona is concerned, we have only been to Jacksonville to see the Jaguars play but St Augustine is so beautiful. It would be worth stopping off there, if only to do the Old Town trolley Tour, which takes about 90 minutes all the way around. That way you would see some of the highlights. the dirve from St Augustine down the A1A to Daytona Beach is just stunning. Definitely do that if you can. It takes a little longer than the I-95 but makes for much more pleasant driving. We always drive up to St Augustine on the 95 but back down the coast road

If you want any more St Augustine advice, please ask. We have been 3 times and are going back again in October.

Wow! Thanks for your tips! Our concern is that we have the long drive (5 hours) from Savannah to Georgia, so we really only want, to an extent, to drive via these places, probs get a quick look around through the car windows, and maybe stop for a bite to eat/quick drink.
Not sure we will be in the mood for a 90 minute trolley tour, as much as that sounds right up our street

Will defo look into doing th A1A road though, even if it is a little bit longer. Might as well do a scenic road if we aren't going to have time to stop off anywhere!

Definitely worth driving via St Augustine. The harbour road thorugh St Augustine is great and you will get some lovely views and be able to see the Castillo de San Marco from the road, drive across the famous Bridge of Lions and down the coast road.

There are a couple of nice places to eat along that road too, if you want some recommendatins (depending what time you might be driving thorugh?)

So, South of Jacksonville, if you fork onto the Dixie Highway (US1) instead of continuing on the I-95 (if that is the way you plan to come down from Savannah), then it will take you right through St Augustine along the harbour road. As you come down the Dixie Highway into St Augustine, it will become the North Ponce de Leon Blvd. Just South of Fort Mose Park, you fork left onto San Marco ave and that will take you right past the Castillo de San Marcos. Just south of the Castillo, you turn left over the Bridge of Lions and then you're on the A1A coast road. After you cross the bridge, you will see signs for the Alligator Farm on your right. Just before the alligator farm, you will see the St Augustine lighthouse on the left. The first part of the coast road seems a bit boring but bear with it. There are times when you are driving with water either side of you and the houses further down are absolutely stunning.

A nice place to stop for lunch would be Mango Mangos on Beach Blvd, at St Augustine beach. south of the lighthouse you will pass the amphitheatre. After that, there is a left turn onto Beach Blvd. Follow the road around to the right, passing the Hampton Inn and the Hilton Garden Inn. It is a bit further down, on the left past the Best Western.

Alternatively, the Sunset Grille near the Hilton Garden Inn is supposed to be nice. We've not eaten there yet, though - plan to go in October (so, if you do have lunch there, let me know what it's like )

You can then follow the beach Blvd down a little way and rejoin the main A1A. We normally leave the A1A at Ormond Beach, then pick up the 95 again down into Orlando but you can continue on to Daytona if you wish.

Ok, all these updates sound absolutely amazing! What a trip!

Im actually reading with new eyes as I have managed to book flights to JFK & flights back from MCO for my birthday in October 2015! (forward planning I know but the price was fab!). We are most likely going to spend 3/4 days in NYC and then get a connecting flight down to Orlando for the remaining 10 or so days. However... the idea of seeing Washington, Phily & SC is ridiculously tempting!

Ill be keeping a very close eye out for your trippy and I guess a read of that, as well as seeing how we cope with all the driving on our West Coast trip in September might enable a decision!
