I like the lonely planet guides, prefer them to rough guides who are probably their main competitor. I am also a big fan of Insight Guides who provide a lot less practical information, but really great overviews of places with great photos, so they are particularly good for giving you inspiration about where to go.

My new favourite research tool is becoming you tube though - some fantastic vlogs out there which can really help you work out what you want to do.

some of them yes! The bigger ones are more guides to consult than read, the discover ones are great though, as are the little pocket guides they do. I usually buy these are they often do 45% off codes on Facebook so they work out quite reasonable.

I'm so glad you're heading to Japan! We've just decided to plan a trip there in the next couple of years so can't wait to read all about your planning and the trip.

I am but I'm scared to death, it's a lot more complicated than anything I've planned previously and there's very little out there on Shanghai yet.

I saw that Shanhai tickets are on sale from 28th March for 16th June opening. Looking forward to keeping up with this as its a possible 2017 plan for me.
