Our eldest daughter did one with her birthday money last year and turns out she is very very British. I know my paternal line has been in this area right back to at least the 1400's (we have a very distinctive surname so easy to trace) but it was interesting to see. It also stated a smattering from the west of Ireland and my great grandma was from Galway.

Me and my dh did this. It caused quite a bit of drama in my dh family.
My dh has known he had a half brother for around 8 years (estranged dads child) and the half brother turned out wasn’t my dh half brother and they were totally unrelated. It turned out that the half brothers mum had lied about who his real father was. We haven’t heard from him since.

I think these tests are interesting but people need to be prepared for unexpected results.

Oh goodness me! Just shows that there’s plenty of problems and falsehoods being brought into the light of day by these things. You couldn’t make some of them up for a tv show or a book some folks have lots of secrets in their past either known or unknown. It’s how we all deal with that info that proves our individual character for who we are.

I did mine hoping for some exotic ancestry, this is what I got,

I think as these get more and more popular that a lot of parenting secrets are going to come out.

I took my test through ancestry, you can also upload your dna to other companies

I had wondered about doing this, but like the OP posted above, I wonder whether it might open a can of worms.

My Mum never met her Dad, but she did do a bit of tracking down and found out where he lived and also that she had half-siblings.

I have been in the position since my early 20s where I have lost both parent and also I don't have any siblings/cousins etc, so I imagine you can understand my curiosity!

Mine have changed over time as the analysis technology improves.

You also get a list of matches - cousins who have uploaded their info to ancestry. Some have their own family trees online - some don't.

Here's an example to give you an idea

It's up to you if you want to make contact and up to them if they chose to respond
Thanks, so maybe doing the family tree is better, has anyone done this? It looks quite time consuming & expensive as the DNA one seems to be a one off payment

You can do some basic stuff for free, use freebmd and get free trials on other sites. Tree and dna work best together.
You can also get free access at local archives.

The problem with the DNA is that is only any good if others have also done the test... For example I have/ had 23 first cousins and far too many 2nd cousins to count... it named the one first cousin who sent me the test and a 2nd cousin who also did a test... the others named were 3rd or further and needed at least part of a family tree to identify any links...
