Anyone Had A Colonoscopy?
Has anyone had a colonoscopy? I have one booked for next month, I was advised I could select to have it via gas and air or via sedation, I am thinking sedation is best - but am I just being a baby?

I have too. I chose gas and air as you’re not supposed to drive for 24 hours after sedation, and I had to take Isabel to an appointment at a different hospital that afternoon so it was a ‘needs must’ situation.
The nurses thought it was pretty hardcore I seem to remember , I don’t think many choose without. It was quite uncomfortable and I did use the entenox quite extensively, but then I only used gas and air in labour to have both my daughters so it may depend on your pain threshold. If someone is able to drive you home, I’d probably advise the sedation - both my DH and DD had it when they had the procedure and only vaguely remember it and experienced no pain.

I have them every year, and can hand on heart say the worst bit is the prep. Ask for picolax if you can and drink it as cold as you can bear, the colder the better!
I have mine with gas and air and that works great for me. With gas and air if used correctly it works wonders. But if you are feeling nervous or anxious definitely go for the sedation. You’re not being a baby it’s quite a scary procedure if you’re not use to being prodded down there. I have Crohn’s so it’s part of life for me and I don’t really think about it anymore but can totally understand that if you’ve never had anything like that before it can be frightening. The actual procedure shouldn’t cause you any pain just slight discomfort. Good luck x

Another Crohn's here and have them annually. I have the sedation, I had it once without and never again. That was more to do with a brutal consultant though.

At our local hospital they only offered light sedation but at one point I felt so much pain I came around, afterwards when I asked I was told this caused by a tight bend in the colon so I would go for sedation

Mrs O had one last week and had sedation. She was wide awake with the doctor and nurses talking to her. She said she felt a couple of uncomfortable bits but nothing painful. The worst part for her was definitely drinking the Moviprep and not straying more than 10 m from the toilet.

I've lost count but probably had six or seven over the past few years. It started from a 'positive' test using the routine 'poo sticks' and I had some polyps removed which would have turned cancerous so I'm all in favour of the system. Agree with other poster's that it's the prep I find more of a struggle than the procedure. I have mild sedation and lay there looking at my insides on a tv screen (no adverts!) and can honestly say I haven't experienced any pain, maybe a little mild discomfort on occasions but that's all. Mine have been carried out at Addenbrooke's, Cambridge. First class facility and staff.

I have one every few years due to family history. I always have sedation but you are conscious and can talk to the doctors and nurses.

My Mum has just had a colonoscopy, and had sedation, was glad she did, and didn’t know anything about it, until she came round again.
