On a scale of 1-10, how far do you think the A) mainline UK railway and B) the Underground, are automated?

In this context, 1=the operators doing absolutely everything and 10=the systems run themselves without any operator input. Operators is a general term meaning drivers, signallers, maintenance, guards etc
Scale wise 5.
I used to work for London Underground so can answer that one directly. Of all the lines that LUL run 3 Central Line. could be run automatically right now - the Victoria, the Jubilee and Central Line. Both Thameslink and Crossrail operationswill be automatic but London Underground have said that driverless operation will not start until platform edge doors (like those on the Jubilee Line Extension) are fitted, that can't be done until all the old trains have been replaced. Its going to take about two years to replace the trains and probably another two years to fit the PEDs so for the first four years the driverless trains will need a driver. Negotiations with the unions are going to be interesting...

And lastly, she needs to split answers in age related replies so if you could indicate whether you are in your 20's, 30's, 40's etc that would be useful. I'm in my 60s.

Hi all,

Thank you so much for your input! For those who were curious, the answer is dependent on the exact systems, job role and lines you are looking at. On average, the answers are:

Mainline drivers = 1, mainline signallers = 3
Underground = 6, underground signallers = 6

Obviously this all changes constantly depending on the state of the railway traffic and in response to emergency situations
