This is the bit I am struggling with .
As far as I can tell it’s just this summer and just because of covid .
I completely agree kids don’t stop needing food just because it’s the holidays but they haven’t had the vouchers any previous holiday so why now ? And why just for this summer ?
Those who rely totally on benefits won’t have had any drop in income because of covid ? They have had to budget for meals in the holidays previously ( rightly or wrongly )
I have very limited knowledge of benefits but I thought that if you were were working but got topped up by benefits , then a change in income would see your benefits rise to a certain extent ? I may well be wrong on this

Of course all kids should have access to food at all times of the year , but I don’t get why it’s only relevant for the school holidays and only because of covid ?

The problem with vouchers of course is their misuse.
Ideally kids would actually get food, not their parents getting vouchers.
Regrettably there will always be people trying to take advantage of the system . And this allows those people who already take advantage and have all the big televisions, designer clothes , alcohol , cigs etc to get even more , while in some occasions neglecting their children

I am well aware this is a minority .
I just wish there were better systems in place to stop these career scrounges and to allow money to be diverted to where it is really needed and allow the scheme to continue in future years for those who genuinely need it and who put their kids first but struggle to provide for them

From what I understand the families that are currently getting vouchers would normally have got free school lunches. These stopped when schools initially closed (except for keyworkers children) and they introduced the voucher scheme so that the children no longer attending still had access to food when they would normally have been getting school lunches.
Apparently nobody thought before that these kids needed support during school holidays too 🙄
Rashford is now putting on pressure for the voucher scheme to be used every school holidays. Let’s hope he’s as successful. And, yes, there will always be people who try to take advantage of the system, or who need more intervention, but this is a good move.
What an amazing inspiration for young kids from these families!

It’s shocking cos it’s only partly true. They got it to set up their constituency office up remotely so for their staff not themselves. I don’t know much about how much it would cost but it isn’t for one person.

Where I work we went from 5000 wfh to 40000 working from home in a week. Had to buy laptops, improve networks, tech, Skype etc not to mention some people need specialist equipment and monitors, storage costs, bandwidth. It all adds up. As traditionally offices have not been working from home non of us know the costs and expenses including reasonable adjustments.

The government has stuff well and stuff poorly but I never know why people choose to share the falsehoods.

Additional Christmas viewing with Marcus Rashford discussing child poverty.

He is also encouraging children to discover the joy of reading.

This young man is definitely a shining light in these very unsettling times.
