The booster plug that Virgin gives you works on same concept as the previous posts.

We ran an ethernet cable up through ceiling, through a cupboard upstairs to the loft, ran it across the loft and back down through airing cupboard.
My ASD son stopped complaining overnight. For us, 1 hole in sight and 2 holes out of sight were worth it for us. |

I didn't pay and still don't. Think they are free if you are on Maxit package.

That's good then and if so the first route to take for a Virgin Maxit customer.

BT whole home Wi-Fi is what you need. 2 disk pack will probably be enough.
You can go cheaper and a LOT more expensive, but BT is the best value for money.

The bonus is it will improve Wi-Fi for everyone across that side of the house. Very simple to set up, 1 electric plug for each disk and one cable out your router into a disk. impossible to get wrong as there are no other holes / slots etc.

The OP is a Virgin customer and may be able to get the fix free.
If not it can be fixed for under £40 rather than the cost of a BT whole home mesh. Edited at 07:53 PM. |

just to add to what Caj said I think the 30 meter ethernet cable cost about £15.and we leave it connected permanently into one of the sky box Ethernet ports. That leaves me with only one spare network port which I run to an 8 port switch to give me more ports but that bit isn't relevant to you.
Ref powerline adapters. I believe some of them have issues if you have different mains ring for each floor so if, for example, your son is on the top floor and the router is on the ground floor they may be on seperate mains rings which may cause problems In your case in not sure how a second router would help as (a) they are not something the average consumer (sorry to be blunt, but true) and (b) the two routers need to talk to each other. So short of running a cable between the 1st router and second router a second router IN MY OPINION wouldnt help. So to summarise, an ethernet cable would give best results but would need running between the two points As a test you could buy a long cable an run it loose between the router and his xbox and see if it helps but if it does work you may have an issue getting it back off of him if you don't like it being draped everywhere ! Good luck and keep us posted. BB
