X Ray for my arm.
I’ve had a painful bone in my arm for weeks now, anti inflammatory does help but gives me a sickly stomach feeling.
I can pinpoint which part of the bone when I press it that the pain is actually coming from. Not my actual elbow but the bone slightly round to the front of it towards my inner arm . It’s quite prominent too , slightly more than the other arm. Even though it’s not an emergency would I be able to just turn up at A&E , I would usually go to the GP but he would probably refer me maybe for an extra any way after trying what I already have. Anyone been to A & E for this type of thing . Thanks,

No. A&E stands for accident and emergency, this is neither.
You need to get a routine referral.

Don't know if you have a minor injuries department Jane, that's where Zac went when he hurt his foot, he got an xray there.

Agree with PoohBearsfan - please do not turn up to A&E for something that has been going on for weeks and is not urgent/critical or an accident/emergency/etc.
I am not entirely familiar with how A&E in the NHS works so this may not be entirely accurate... but generally A&E doctors are specialists in emergency medicine and junior doctors who are rotating through the department. They can refer to doctors from other specialties but may not do so for less urgent cases, and may sometimes just treat and discharge with follow up outpatient or with the GP. And with the triage system you will likely have a long wait if not having an urgent medical condition. If you see your GP, s/he would be able to make an assessment and hopefully a (preliminary) diagnosis, and either treat or refer you on to the appropriate specialists. Quite a lot of things can cause pain in an arm so best to see your GP in the first instance if you need to get it checked out! Your GP will also be able to decide on whether further treatment or further imaging is required (may not be an Xray).

I have been suffering similar pain. Its to do with tendons rather than bone I think. So maybe the GP is your best bet. He maybe feel the need for an xray which you can be sent to directly, rather than sitting through a and e.
I had tennis elbow years ago and had a strap for it. I've been wearing it for a few days now and the 'bone pain' is somewhat better. Edited at 06:15 PM. |

You can self refer at Stirling for XRays.
However, I'd suggest seeing a private physio as a first step. My GP suggested this to me as he said he couldn't do an accurate diagnosis for shoulder pain in the allotted 8 minute appointment, and an NHS referral would be months. The physio gave me a full 45 minute consultation, wrote to my GP for pain relief, and gave me a few follow up appointments for manipulation and massage. Well worth it. (I had frozen shoulder, and sometimes the pain wasn't in my shoulder but could be in my upper arm or chest) Hope you get it sorted. |

Thanks all, I’m not going to go to the hospital , when I said A & E that maybe wasn’t the correct term, I didn’t mean the department that the ambulance brings emergency into (sorry that is a & e)
I meant I guess what linda mentioned, it’s an area in our local hospital that we can go to for these non emergencies. It sounds like what is minor injuries . I saw my next door neighbour there she is a kidney nurse at freeman Newcastle. She said try my GP for first step as a lot of them are doing even video calls or telephone calls.

Glad it’s a bit better , I’ve got a support strap thing too and wear it on and off.
It’s my right arm so it’s hard not to use it every day , I blame the cordless hoover

Oh dear hope you get it sorted, my stubborn Hubbie had a fall off his bike & would not go to hospital when he did it, well it didn’t get better so he went to A&E nearly 4 weeks later
Only After we all moaned at him to get it seen, the Dr there said he shouldn’t really see him as it’s been so long, but as he was “ in a good mood “ he agreed to it, well it was broken & he needed an operation & screw in his wrist 😬 This was 2 years ago, but like others have said get a Drs appointment first for a referral. Good luck 😘xxx |
