They don't literally give you the cash back when you leave the villa; you have to wait a couple of weeks, sometimes a month, to get it. This allows time for a proper inventory and inspection of the villa after you leave with a few days extra in case any other damage, loss or liability comes to light.
As previous posters have said, this deposit will sometimes be taken as a card swipe, so no cash changes hands. Be advised that by no means all villa owners accept damage insurance in place of a deposit. Insuers tend to be very picky about paying out, and some claims can take months to resolve. |

In my previous experiences the swipe was on a manual machine and never held against the card, just there ready if they needed to charge it. Not sure this is the case with our holiday this year. Hotel beds will be our villa management company. I heard they do the one off insurance charge, if so we will probably take this option.

Please also remember if any damage happens and it totals more than the cover of the damage insurance you will still be billed for the excess amount.
