Virgin Flying Club Miles question.

Hi (it's my morning for being a bit dim - so please bare with me )

I have accumulated 39,600 miles in my flying club account - now I have never really known how these work.

I logged into my account this morning followed the link to get a quote for my flights in Jan 2020 - but if I select the "use miles" option then the quote is actually more expensive than just getting a quote on the Virgin Atlantic Site without the miles.

Am I to assume that there are no "miles" seats available for the days I want ?

The flights are cheap enough without using the miles (£313.00 each) flying direct from Manchester to MCO.

Is there anything else I can spend my miles on ?

I am completely flummoxed by it all... that's after being bamboozled by a car hire problem earlier - you wouldn't think we go every year - sometimes twice !

There is limited value in collecting Flying Club miles for economy flights as the fees and taxes are ridiculous.

How many miles do you need for Premium Economy?

Economy is often cheaper to buy than to use miles for. Its the premium or upper that usually work out cheaper but if going economy I would just pay at that price to be honest.

OP. I guessed your dates due to your post on the car forum. What about a Miles flight MAN - MCO and return which is available for weeks and weeks around your dates.

£241.24 and 25000 Miles.

I'm guessing your £313 is for economy light. If you don't need the seat selection and luggage that you get with Classic(which is what you get with a miles booking) then it's possible your miles might be better used elsewhere or waiting til you have enough for an upgrade.

can you use your points to upgrade to P, providing you have booked an upgradeable ticket. If not keep collecting them until you have enough for a reward flight in PE

When you book a flight on the VA web site, you are presented with 3 prices: Economy, PE and UC. The Economy price will say 'From'.
When you select Economy, you then get 3 more choices: Lite, Classic and Delight. The price you saw initially is just the Lite fare. The 'normal' Classic fare will be about £100 more (It was for me for a flight from LGW in April/May). I am guessing your £313 is Lite and Classic will be about £413. I find it very annoying that they don't present you with the Classic fare at the outset.
When you use your miles, your reward flight will be Classic. Classic includes luggage and advance seat booking. Given that Tom says the reward flight is £241.24 + 25000 miles, you are getting a discount of about £170. Therefore I don't see how you are seeing a price that is more, if you are comparing like with like - you did click through to get the Classic fare, didn't you?

I upgraded today from economy to premium using miles for one adult - it was 11500 miles and £94 for tax. I used their text number which was really convenient and they were really helpful as like you, I’m new to this. You just give them your flying club number and flight details and ask if there are miles seats and if so, how many miles to upgrade or purchase a seat. The number is 07481 339184 and it is 24 hours
