Garage Conversion and New Kitchen

I’ve enjoyed these types of threads in the past so thought I would make one on our building work that’s going on at the moment, started on Monday. It’s a garage conversion (converting half of a double garage), knocking down of a load bearing wall to integrate the converted garage and current kitchen, then moving the kitchen in to the space that was the garage.

Here’s the current floor plan:

So the wall being knocked down is the one between the kitchen and garage. This needs a steel ‘goal post’ put in. You can see how the garage looks from the outside here:

A new wall will then be built up between the 2 garages and a window out in where the garage door is currently

The kitchen is moving in to this new garage space and the existing kitchen area will be for a dining table.

Day 1

Day 1 and they threw a load of people on the job to get everything ripped out. Kitchen removed, floor tiles taken out and some of the pipes dug out from the floor. They need to re-route the water and waste for the new kitchen.

The half of the garage that is staying a garage had a DIY conversion to a workshop done by the previous owner as well so that all needed ripped out to turn it back in to a garage.

Start of the day:

End of the day:

Day 2

They took down the wall! And also dug more of the channel for the pipes under the floor.

Have you looked into epoxy resin floor for the garage/kitchen or covering the kitchen counter with it?

Amazing how much can be done in one day! Loving the plan for the new layout. It will be fabulous. Looking forward to following along. We knocked our dining room and kitchen together last year and needed a steel beam put in. Also we hadn’t realised that the floors in the two rooms were about 1.5 inches different in height! Floors needed to be levelled before anything else could be done. But it all turned out great and we love the open plan living/dining.

We converted our garage too - but it's a games room for the boys. We also moved our kitchen from one end of the house to the other! It created a much better space of us. You'll enjoy the room when it's all done.

OP. I do like a construction thread! Great early progress, now make sure they keep coming back as builders are tinkers for disappearing for days on end.

How are you managing for a kitchen whilst all this is taking place? So disruptive to lose the kitchen even for a day or two.

Brilliant! Can't wait to see the end result. Love these threads... but a question that has always puzzled me with garage conversions. Where do you put all your stuff? We have a quadruple garage full of all sorts of things but mainly items for bf's work/woodworking equipment etc.

We are building an outdoor office for me down the garden and then will be bashing the wall out between the kitchen and my current office to make it a big kitchen/diner.

Eventually we want to go up a floor too (currently a bungalow) but we can't afford that yet but would want a large bedroom and en-suite upstairs. Total new roof so it would be costly.

You have a lovely looking house
