I have no advice as I am not in the UK but going down may help.

I’ve been absent the last few days as I’ve been consumed with worry as DD has been feeling very homesick which has come as a huge shock for her and us as she’s such an outgoing girl and really looking forward to going.

In fairness to her, she’s been out and about with her flat mates and students from her course so she’s definitely trying to settle in but she’s finding it much harder than she thought.

Her boyfriend is going to stay with her tomorrow night until Saturday so she’s really looking forward to seeing him and she did FaceTime me earlier and she seemed a bit happier. I’ve decided that when she calls I’m just going to chat about day to day things and not ask her how she is as that’s when it all comes out.

It’s so hard though, she’s only an hour away but when she’s upset I just want to hug her and make it all better.

Hopefully once the course starts properly, she can throw herself into it. I think she knows it’s going to take time but she just wasn’t expecting to feel like this.

Good luck to everyone off this coming weekend.

I’m so sorry your DD has found it hard to settle for now. I do think Freshers week can be the hardest for some as there is so much pressure on them to socialise. I wonder if it’s easier when the course starts and they can meet people in a more natural environment?

Hopefully seeing her bf for a few days will help her get over the homesickness. Our elder son and his fiancée are spending a night in Bristol towards the end of Freshers week and going to a concert with Georgia as a band they all like are playing in Bristol. I think this will be nice for Georgia, not only for their company but to help her if she’s homesick

Sorry to hear that, I think it’s part and parcel of starting uni as it’s such a major shock that we just can’t prepare them for.
As I’ve said before , my ds is the same as your dd, very outgoing and makes friends easily but he had a wobble and it shocked me (and him i think) to hear him so sad .
I think it was little things that hit him and 1 was not really having a schedule to eat like a normal dinner time and his whole sleep cycle was off for weeks which didn’t help .
He did get through it in that sense but his mental health took a dive but he’s on medication now and doing better which is all I can hope for 🤞🏼
He now has other issues with uni that I’m hoping can be sorted for his sake but that’s a whole other saga!
Mostly they get through this rough patch and realise it’s actually really good for them but sometimes they don’t and that’s ok too ..

I actually don’t like freshers week - long periods of inactivity with a mixture of feelings, from the fear of missing out to putting on a false front to try and fit in and thinking everyone else is having so much fun. My 2 preferred it when lectures started.

I think you have a good point! It is a bit of an unreal time.

Hopefully all the new students will settle down into a routine and find their feet! I think there will be blips (DS had his on Monday with a change of options - all seems to have worked out!) but hopefully they will all come out stronger whatever they decide to do!

My daughter isn’t looking forward to Freshers, I think she would feel happier if she could start the week later. She wants to make friends and socialise but feels Freshers is too full on for her and prefers to get to know people at a slower pace. I am worried that she could have a panic attack or it may knock her confidence for making friends at her own pace.

I can only advise to take things easy and be herself. Ry doesn’t drink and is incredibly shy .. and probably stayed in his room a bit too much lol ... but always tried to speak to his flat mates at meal times. He didn’t go out at all except the Wednesday afternoon fair but it was too busy for him and he didn’t enjoy it

Georgia will be fine I’m sure - she’s done her research and knows what events don’t involve drinking ... she just doesn’t need to go to everything and it’s ok to have some quiet time xx

I agree, my DD now has no class time at all until next Monday morning, so she actually has more time to fill until then, than she’s been there in total. 4 days is a long time when you have no routine.

I also agree about Fresher’s week although Ben seems to be okay. He has kept himself busy and looked around campus, been into Canterbury etc but is not keen to participate in the eve events. He has spent most of the time with 4 of his flat mates out of 7, 1 boy and 3 girls. I think once his course starts and he has more of a routine then he will be happier.
