I can offer some info re flights. we looked at a through ticket Edin-Bangkok- Ko Samu and it was expensive! We then looked at booking separately and discovered flight to Bangkok were really cheap for school holidays! We are flying with Qatar Edin- Bangkok in July. I was delighted to secure flights at £430 pp, good flight times good reviews. We are then flying on to Ko Samui. So... after loads of research I discovered that you cannot for love nor money get a cheap flight to Samui. I believe its because Bangkok Air own the airport and do not allow low cost carriers. You basically can fly with Bangkok Air or Thai Airways and the going rate is roughly £200 per person!
Alternatively to keep costs down you can fly down the mainland and get the ferry. Much cheaper but takes practically a day. I decided to swallow it and pay for the 1 hr flight. Because the Bangkok flight was cheap I could justify it...So...we are £620 pp for all flights. Hope that helps

Like you, I am a little apprehensive! We are staying at Grand Eastin Sathorn, chosen as it is attached to a BTS so nice and easy to get around. In Koh Samui I had booked the Imperial Boathouse, then they notified me they were closing for re-furb! I have now booked PS Thana in the same resort Choeng Mon.
Been doing loads of planning this week and looking forward to experiencing new things

I personally think that’s really expensive. Just as an example we booked ours DIY but we flew Gatwick to Bangkok (with emirates). I booked internal flights from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai to Koh Samui, Koh Samui to Bangkok and then Obviously our return flights home. All of the flights and accommodation have come in at less than £2000 for two of us. It is a lot cheaper to book direct / DIY and you can get some really good deals. Transfers / taxis when you are in bangkok (or Thailand) are really cheap especially if they use the meter. So if you don’t mind booking DIY i’d Really recommend having a look at pricing it up yourself

Oh and christybell re: flights direct to Koh Samui you are totally right that Bangkok Air have a monopoly on that, we booked ours with Bangkok Air but via Budget Air (found them via Skyscanner) and saved about £100 for each person doing this and the flight was exactly the same, so if you want to fly direct to the island i’d Really suggest looking at budget air

Wow, I had never realised how expensive the routing BKK to Koh Samui was. Just done a search for August - £224 return. Return flights to Phuket were £24 (a longer journey)!
