I don't think it's a controversial opinion, if musical theatre isn't your thing and your focus is good food then Ellen's isn't going to tick your boxes. The food is okay but you can get better elsewhere for the same money but the entertainment and atmosphere is the focus .
It's a bit like complaining that Planet Hollywood isn't a great dining experience, it isn't meant to be, people go for other reasons.

As others have said food is ok, really enjoyed the atmosphere and singing. I think we waited about half an hour late afternoon/early evening.
