I drive the Skoda Citygo. Mine's automatic, but it's a very nice nippy enough car. It's the same as the VW Up and the Seat Mii.

My advice is to think outside the box a little, typical first cars aren’t always the cheapest to insure, so don’t be afraid to look at say a 1.3 Yaris/Corolla, or a 1.4 Focus, obv she doesn’t want a tank but the typical driver of a small family car is less likely to have an accident then that of a typical first car (statistically)
Fiestas are mighty nice, Citroen c1 and Skoda Citigo share a chassis I believe, as do the Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 107 all 4 are rather tiny, but good for a first timer. When we looked for mine and my sisters cars I set up a spoof profile on confused.com (used my postcode, but a house up the street, our landline number that’s not used anymore, and an old email address I don’t check to dodge the never ending spamming) We then put a max price and distance in auto trader and started at the high end of the budget and stuck everything that wasn’t a write off, or too big (as in over a 1.6l engine or bigger then a ford escort) into the spoof profile to see what we could insure. Then balanced the cost of insurance with the running costs of said car. Came out as a 1l fiesta or a 1.6 Focus as the most suitable cars for my brother and I to share when I passed, so got the 1.6 Focus And a sturn reminder that it had more power then my instructors car the first time I got to drive it. (Focus parts are cheap as they are a common car) My sister ended up with use of my car (as I walk to work) as running another car when our mum also walks to work didn’t make sense. Okay long advice post... sorry. Basically don’t limit the search to tiny cars with tiny engines (a 1.6 isnt too powerful given a bit of initial warning and instruction) And choose something cheap for maintenance, as on an old cheap car your gonna have to replace some parts over its life (fords are good in this respect, as they are really common most the parts aren’t too bad to replace)

I have a Vauxhall viva. It’s a fairly new car but my insurance was 950 - no black box.

My brother works for the AA in Norfolk, and there are some bargains out there if you are patient.
Some of the best he has found are cars owned by retired people from new, dealer serviced, low mileage, garage kept... if you are prepared to go for something unfashionable like a Hyundai Getz...prob low insurance, realively va popular trendy car.

I bought my son a 6m old Vaulxhall viva the shop had used as a courtesy car. At 17 his insurance was £1,050 with me and Dad as named drivers and a black box. 12m later it was £1k with the black box removed but oddly had to take me and Dad off the insurance this time as we made it more expensive. He’s had it just over 2 years now and it’s been great. No costs apart from general servicing and won’t go too fast! He drives back from Uni every week and has done placements 60 miles from his Uni for 3m so it’s done a few miles. If he runs it for 7 years the car will have cost us 1k per year which I think is a decent deal assuming it doesn’t need major work in that time. I think really old first cars tend to work out as a false economy as keeping them on the toad can be a major drip, drip cost.

Just bought our youngest son a lovely little Vauxhall Corsa 1.0. Great deal and very clean little car. Costing £1200 to insure with a black box. Very economical on fuel and 1.0 is plenty quick enough to get him around.
We’ve looked at lots of little cars that are about 10 years old. Peugeot 206 - rust and very dated interiors. VW Polo - nice little cars but costed more to insure for him. We also noticed that with the VW and Corsa - so many for sale that have over 100,000 Miles on the clock but still in very good condition. His Corsa has electric windows, air con, pioneer radio ... so different to our first cars!
