Q. Is it true that people over 65 are not eligible for the Scheme?
A. No. Eligibility for the Motability Scheme is based on people being in receipt of either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC of DLA) or the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement. People who do not already receive the HRMC of DLA are not able to apply for it after the age of 65, but anyone who already has it can join the Scheme regardless of their age. Unless of course they already receive it as above The OP didn't say if they already received it so I was just pointing that out Edited at 08:33 PM. |

We have a car on the scheme for my mum which I drive as she doesn't and because of my own disabilities, I'm around more to take her places. We are still in our first vehicle so we haven't come to renew it yet. I had to pay quite a big down payment for ours which I didn't realise at first doesn't carry over to the next vehicle as equity so that money has gone into oblivion (my fault for not really understanding that bit). So...
Pluses - new car, no service fees, no worries about vehicle tax, no worries about breakdown cover as it's included, as is insurance with a couple of named drivers if you like, I believe there is an option to buy the car at the end of the term too but I'm not sure exactly. It's basically worry free motoring for 3 years. Minuses - limited model choices of vehicles and not really any sporty choices (which I was disappointed about - we may be disabled but some of us really like sportier cars), some models have high down payments and these mount up over few vehicles, no build up of no claims as I understand it, it's never really your car and could be taken back (although there will need to be a very good reason for it and I've not heard of anyone having this happen). You do need have to have entitlement to the higher rate mobility for the whole term of your vehicle lease. Also, I believe if you don't want to lease a car Motability do a finance scheme to buy a vehicle but then you do lose the insurance and servicing plans... You would get entitlement for the vehicle tax to be paid for still I think as it would be a vehicle for a disabled person still. Their website has quite a bit of information and their staff are very helpful if you call to ask specifics |

The scheme really does seem to good to be true and i must admit we had some doubts at first but we are on our 2nd car now with a change due in Nov and we have not had any problems at all!
Go for it!

It's a wonderful scheme we hear nothing but praise for it at work And you can either rent to buy or just lease the vehicle.

Mileage must have gone up as was always 11000 a year. Not really looked into mileage on the new vehicle as it tends to level out over the 5 years. We have to have 5 years as it's highly adapted. I do not think there is any thing to say it's to good to be true. Will google the mileage.

We have our first Motability vehicle for DS. Like Beth's his is highly adapted to accommodate his specialised mobility equipment. We have had it for over 4 years and are starting to look at our next one now. Although we've had lots of problems with this particular vehicle (definitely a Friday car ) the Motability scheme itself has been fine, they are quick to get problems sorted and we will use it again. For converted vehicles it means a hefty advance payment but we have also lost thousands on buying privately in the past.
It is a lot simpler if adaptations are not required, basically you get a brand new car every 3 years and all the maintenance and servicing costs and the cost of insurance are paid for from the one monthly payment which is taken from the mobility component of DLA. Vehicles are tax exempt. Depending on the vehicle chosen you may also have an advance payment to find but many perfectly decent cars are available without anything upfront. Their website has very clear and helpful info and they are happy to explain everything over the phone. Mileage was increased recently to 60,000 for a 3 year lease and 100,000 for WAVs on a 5 year lease. Edited at 09:01 PM. Reason: adding link |
