Yes, it's a shame. I've seen photos and it looks as though it was a rival to Grand Central Terminal for stunning architecture.

People watching in Central Park, sitting on a bench, eating a Deli lunch.

We were in NYC last November, had a fantastic time. Prior to our trip I downloaded a little book to my Kindle called 100 things to do for free in NYC! Very good, gave us lots of ideas. We had some lovely walks and saw an awful lot more than we would have done in a car, we did do the open top bus tour, we did pay for this but well worth the money!
Our best free finds were the NY Library, Grand Central Station and St Patricks cathedral, all worth a visit.
Hope you have a fabulous time! X

The 9/11 Memorial is free after 5pm on Tuesdays, tickets are limited though - check their website.
Other museum also do Pay what you wish days - nyc-arts/collections/...-what-you-wish
If you looking for something outside, then I would recommend Carl Schruz Park - carlschurzparknyc/. The walk from the park along the East River will take you close to The Roosevelt Island Tram - this costs $2.50 each(Metro Card)

MOMA is free 4-8 on Fridays, its best to arrive and queue by about 3.45 tho as the queues are big - you have to get a ticket but they are free.

also agree re the highline, its really nice! also love central park.x
