help needed with scooter/electric wheelchair

Looking to plan another trip in the future - our intention was to stay onside but have a feeling with the changes we may be priced out if DDP is not included so considering options of going back to off site which gives us other issues...

The next trip we will have to use either a scooter or electric wheelchair for an adult in our party - question is they are new to using one in the UK so no clue how we would use one offsite? Would we be able to hire a vehicle that we could get one in easily (no one in our party could manually lift one in) - what options would we have?

I believe there are wheelchair accessible vans for hire. If they can use a scooter though they might be much better off hiring one of them. I have seen some very light weight ones that come apart for putting in the car.

DH and I both have to use mobility scooters, we both have Pride Go Go Elite Traveller Plus scooters which are fairly lightweight by comparison to others, and can be easily hired in the USA, but we take our own with us.

Although usually only 2 of us we still hire a minivan and ask Alamo to fold down the last row of back seats in the van for us before pick up. We then partially breakdown the scooters, remove the basket, seat, and battery, lower the tiller bar.

We then lift the base into the car between us and roll the base forwards, storing the battery , seat and basket behind it.

It does take it out of us, but we take our time at it, and quite often someone in the car park will offer to help.

Overnight we just have to take the scooter batteries out of the vehicle to charge, as we stay in a villa we usually take these into the garage and leave there to charge so we don't have to carry them very far.

Alternatively there are some specialist wheelchair accessible car hire companies out there a simple google search of orlando based ones should bring these up, they supply vehicles with a ramp etc. However they can't accommodate 2 scooters in one vehicle. I have no experience of using these companies, but make sure you have the right insurance when booking these as they are more used to dealing with American hirers who don't need as much cover as we do.

Of course when our DD and SIL come with us they do all the lifting and shifting for us, which is brilliant.

I hope this helps a bit, if not I am sure someone else we be along soon to share their experience.

Hi, we stay offsite and rent a scooter for my husband. He had never used one at home but he could never manage around the parks without one. Our first trip was 3nights at POR and we used the Disney bus transportation. They let wheelchairs on first and were very patient with my ‘newbie’ to scootering husband ... after a couple of times it got a lot easier😁. You can also use the scooter on the boats to Disney springs. We moved to a villa and we hired a dodge minivan - we had a scooter that you could lift the seat and the battery off so you can lift it in the car but it did take two of us (me and my 16yr old) and the battery is heavy, I couldn’t manage to do it on my own as the base of the scooter is to cumbersome.
