Unlikely to be anything related to the staff or station if you are using pay at pump. Someone puts something over the top when they fill up there own car, then come back later in the day and collect there device.

I had it happen to me in tesco pay at pump here, i noticed it looked different but just assumed they had a new machine.

I've always been fine. If it even asks for your ZIP code just enter all 0s.
