Child Passport Expired - Renew or Replace?

Hi everyone. My son's child passport expired in 2020, and he needs a new one. Is he able to go through the renewal process, or do I need to do a new application? I can't find an answer on the official gov website. Help please!

Its a renewal.
My son’s ran out during covid. I did a renewal and it came back in 3 weeks.
Renewal’s are meant to be quicker as all the main information is already on file from the 1st original application. The renewal application form asks for previous passport number.

So don’t do a new application from scratch - it takes longer.

I did my daughters recently, because you put their old passport number on it uses all the previous details so you don't need to reapply and start again.
It does say that if they have changed significantly that a new photo will be needed so you'd have to do the whole countersign thing again, but it's a much easier and quicker process than the first time you did it
