Firstly (before I may rant on)... tipping is a personal preference and everyone has their own opinion and right to tip or not...

Tipping at check-in? Never ever heard of that before let alone seen it. Absolutely not.

Bell Hop - yes, as some have said - we tip on collection.

Breakfast - buffet we'll tip a dollar or two for the coffees/orange juice etc if it's kept free flowing. I understand why some wouldn't tip here.

Shops - no. They really just scan items.

In-hotel restaurants. Yes - the same as any restaurant for us (always 20% or less depending on service).

Housekeeping. Now I've no idea how much housekeeping earn. What I do know is that it must be a most horrible job in some instances, where you're cleaning up bathrooms and bins in particular - they must have to tidy up all sorts of things and without complaint. Surely no one would do that job unless with little choice? (and I humbly apologise to those that do it because they love the job).

They get tipped every day by us. Then we leave a cup of all the jangly change we have collected and not used over the holiday on the last day.

God bless good housekeeping. I don't need to see them to appreciate what they do. In a country built upon a tipping culture, housekeeping to me is the top of the list to tip.

Couldn’t agree more

As you suggest and I agree everything to do with tipping is personal preference.

But IMO there is nothing more degrading than giving someone the loose shrapnel from the bottom of your purse however much it adds up to. If you are going to tip do it properly with a note.

Sorry just my opinion, it shows how different we all are!

Absolutely respect that opinion.

We did ponder whether to do it or not - and decided that we'd rather receive $30/$40 in any form than not. Having tipped all the holiday, we're sure they understand it's best intentions. If they feel it's degrading - drop it in a charity box.

Ah moral dilemmas eh!

We tip mousekeeping. Do the dibb still have the mousekeeping envelopes you can print for this purpose?

We tip taxi drivers

Hair dressers

Coach drivers (used to be called a whip round)

Bell services

Restaurant servers

I suppose we treat people like it was our son or daughter providing the service.

I can't say that I've ever tipped my daughter for bringing a drink to me, or carrying a plate over to me at a table, or making her bed, or driving us to the shops, or anything similar.

If I treated these people like my daughter then they wouldn't get any tips!

I don't leave my toothbrush out. I put it in a drawer when I'm out.

And now I have the old country song ‘No Charge’ in my head…
