manatee swims
Hiya everybody! Im going on my first trip to florida in july and ever since i saw manatees on newsround about 9-10 years ago ive been in love with them! Now im actually going to florida I really really would love to swim with them, but me and my boyfriend are not hiring a car and im worried that we wouldnt be able to swim with them as most of the excursions are miles away from where we are staying in LBV. Also i have heard that the manatee swim excursions only take place in certain months - mainly the colder months of around sept-march, is this true? thankyoooou soo much to anybody who can help me

Some Manatee News
Return To Wild
By YVETTE C. HAMMETT yhammett@tampatrib.com Published: Feb 27, 2004 APOLLO BEACH - Salvador's gray, whiskered face wore an impatient expression Thursday as seven full-grown humans held him down. Struggling to lug the 685- pound mass of flesh to the water's edge, a gaggle of biologists, veterinarians and other rehabilitators hustled the Florida manatee to the shoreline and released him into a man- made finger of Tampa Bay. Finally, freedom came for him. The story isn't so rosy for some. The latest mortality figures for the endangered marine mammals show that 380 died in Florida waters in 2003, an increase of 75 from the previous year and the highest mortality rate in at least four years. The major causes of death were red tide and boaters. Nearly 100 succumbed to red tide, a noxious algae bloom off Florida' southwest coast, and boats killed 73. Several dozen onlookers standing on the observation platform at Tampa Electric Co.'s Manatee Viewing Center applauded as Salvador and two other manatees sank out of sight, their radio tags bobbing behind them. The tags will help researchers monitor their movement. All three had spent more than a year in local rehabilitation centers - Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa and Parker Aquarium in Bradenton - after suffering cold-related stress. For at least a year, a team from Wildlife Trust, a national conservation organization, will track their every move using high-tech geographic positioning system tags attached to rings around their tails. Anyone wishing to follow their progress can log onto wildtracks. (This site has some nice pictures of the manatees - Ken) |
