If you have tesco club card vouchers you can use them towards railcard and train fare.

You can also save on the railcard - it's often on offer for 10%-20% off. Check moneysavingexpert.com for discounts.

We're traveling on the 30th of June. I found the cheapest price was 2 months before travel. We paid £62 return for 2A, 2C with a railcard.

Could you maybe borrow a railcard from a friend if they have one? I've used a friends before.

Can you only book 12 weeks in advance?
Also with the rail card I assume it needs to valid on the date of travel as well as the date you purchase the tickets? We were planning on getting the coach from Glasgow to Manchester airport, but I'm not keen on the times and I think the train would be nicer - and we'd be able to walk about etc. xx

Usually they are only released 12 weeks before departure. We usually book at the 12 week point for travelling to airport then two weeks later book our journey home.
No it doesn't have to be valid when you book your train tickets. I have tickets to travel to London end of August and still haven't got my railcard yet. I will get it end of July so I get about 11 months out of it from first journey. |

Morning!
I work on the railway, and agree that a railcard is good for saving you money. ~It lasts a year, so if you are travelling locally or even if you fit in another airport trip in a year then you normally get the card cost and more back. Advanced tickets open 10-12 weeks in advance depending on the rail operator (at the moment we are open until the first week of August), anything outside of that and you will be paying for a super off peak/off peak/open fare which is more expensive but also a bit more flexible. Advance tickets are booked on specific trains for dates and times, so you need to make sure you allow time for customs, any potential delays etc. Depending where you are travelling you might also get a group ticket which doesn't require a railcard, or in Wales for example we have a Gatwick Flyaway for travelling to Gatwick which is £135 for 2,3 or 4 adults regardless of time... Just to Reading can be twice that in for one adult peak hours...! |
