You have to remember when it was built - 1955. Walt had a fixed budget so to produce everything he wanted, he had to fit it all into the balance sheet. Roy was insistent on that. Sleeping Beauty castle is actually quite beautiful and takes many of its features such as the turrets from Neuwschwanstein castle in Germany which Walt had visited on his European trips. One feature that Disneyland has that WDW doesn't is that Tinker Bell flies backwards and forwards several times across the front of the castle. Size-wise Disneyland park is 85 acres as compared to Magic Kingdom's 105 acres and the largest is Paris at 126 acres. It's difficult to expand it as it is surrounded by office buildings and hotels. I recall the days when where Disney's California adventure is located was the car park!
Disneyland also has two unique rides that MK does not - Alice in Wonderland and the Matterhorn Bobsleds.

Great day. I agree (and as you know I'm a big Disney geek) that some of the prices now are just unbelievable - phone cases being my personal bugbear. The quality isn't great, either.

I love navy blue and silver so am really drawn to your souvenirs of the day - can see I'd have been buying the same sorts of things if I'd have visited then.

You have to remember that when Walt had Sleeping Beauty castle built it was back in the 50s, his brother was making him work to a budget and ride buildings weren't on such a grand scale as they are today. I can tell you with total certainty that So Cals (locals) wouldn't change it for all the tea in China. It's original and fits in perfectly with DL's neat appearance. WDW is a totally different design because it surmounts a hill deliberately built so Utilidors could be constructed beneath it. They couldn't dig down for a basement because of water tables in the swamps. They wanted a grand gesture and thus Cindy's castle came to be. DL park may be smaller but it actually packs things in. It has 57 rides and attractions as oppossed to Magic Kingdom's 41.

A very good but long and maybe a bit expensive day. I love the bracelets though and the Mickey and Minnie.
